Hi all,
99 xlt 4x4 3.0 flex 86000 miles - was running fine just preventive maintenance
Tonight I changed my plug wires and only 5 of my plugs as the #1 plug is in there good. I sprayed a bit of PB penetrator on each plug, and all but the 1 came out. I have resprayed the 1 and tried a few times, but it won't budge. I'm afraid it may break.
The plugs that were in it were AGSF22PPM, but I put in the new fine wire plugs AGSF12FM after reading about the whole 3.0 plug issue. It ran fine both before and after the change.
I am driving to St Louis this weekend, about 250 miles one way. Logic tells me I need to get this plug out before the trip, but what if I can't?
Will the mix of 5 new plugs and 1 old be ok for a while? What about the difference in the heat ranges of the plugs?
What if it did break off?
Is sounds like the plugs have been changed before....The original plugs should have been AGSF12P, and AGSF12PG....You will be happy with the AGSF12FMF6 plugs....
Ya, I was a bit surprised that it didn't have the original plugs. The service record the dealership gave me didn't show a plug/wire change. So the previuos owner must have done it. It has been running fine today, already drove about 50 miles for work.
I know a previous post said I should be fine with the 5 new and 1 old. Anyone else have a second opinion?
should be fine, i'd do it for the trip, but later on, take a 12point or a 6point and jam that little guy outta there. might help if the engines warm (expansion)
I broke the tip off one last week doing a tune up. It wouldn't budge. I sprayed it with Liquid Wrench and tried about an hour later with a breaker bar, taking it real slow. It still wouldn't come out. I let it sit over night with another spray of Liquid Wrench, and said my prayers before bed (I'm serious). The next morning I got it out with the breaker bar. I have strong faith in breaker bars, liquid wrnech, and prayer.
either warm it up or shove some dry ice on it. expansion works both ways. Learned the dry ice in the water business. friend just got a sparkplug out on his old Ford that way.
Best way I have ever used is warm the engine and then spray the plug with a can of nitrogen and hit it quick with the breaker bar. Works every time.
Dave
Thanks for everyones input. I got home from work Friday evening, sprayed a bit more PB on it, waited about 15 minues, then while the engine was still warm, tried once more. It came right out.
So I was able to make my trip with all new plugs. It ran great the whole time (about 550 miles round trip). With the other things I did (cleaned the throttle body, new wires, etc etc.) it's running like a champ.
Thanks again guys.
Did you put some anti-seize compound on the threads of your new plugs? Really helps to prevent this type of frustration in the future. Small tube of the compound is less than a couple of dollars.
Glad you were able to resolve the problem relatively easily.
