I'm planning on buying the one-piece window kit from John's F-Fun Hundred's that includes all the parts for eliminating the vent window with a larger piece of glass and I'd love to hear any pros or cons to the install.
I've decided to definitely do the change, but I want to hear as many tips or problems encountered to help me out.
I haven't done it yet, but probably will do a one window assembly. Pro's, less wind noise when the windows are up, a cleaner look, less expensive that replacing or repairing the original. Con's, lose the original look, driving with the windows down at speed will create more wind in the vehicle, can't crack the vent to allow air into the cab if the windows fog etc. There are probably lots of other considerations. I have a 64 t-bird and love the vent windows when driving on the highway and there is no need for air, but too warm with everything up tight.
I have been tossing around the window idea. I thought about the no vent window set up, but have decided against it because of not being able to use the vent, going with electric set up vs the orginal or similar set up. I like the way the truck looks with the orginal set up. My truck is a 56.
Husker just about covered all the pros and cons I can think of. I for one really like the look of the vent windows. It sets your vehicle apart from the new vehicles that lack them.
Some day, on the new cars, a manufacturer is going to add small windows to the front of the side glass. People will marvel at how this new thing allows a customing of air flow, discarding of cig ashes, etc. It will be called a "vent window". Everyone will clamor to add one to their inferior factory door windows. Kits will be sold to make this available to the driveway mechanic!
This will come on the heels of the newest creation called the "station wagon", which is now in the process of being reinvented. How soon we forget that being the newest doesn't make it better. Usually, it just saves the manufacturer some $$$.
My 56 that I'm building is not stock by no means. But, when it came to the vent window I remember driving down the road with my dad in his old Ford Pickup, sticking my arm out the window and playing with the vent window to keep me cool from the heat. So, I decided to keep my vent window for that day when I didn't need the A/C for cooling and to feel that fresh air blow across the cab and bring back memories of growing up and seeing my dad sitting across from me. No pros, no cons, just memories and a little wind noise. Good luck on your decision and it will look good either way.
58. I put single piece side window in my 53. I like the look. wind noise at speed goes away. I thought that the wind would be bad with window down at speed, not the case. I've since put in A.C. but still think the single side window is one of the better things I did. See pics in my gallery.
I'm doing the same with the Cowl vent, keeping it intact that is. I plan on the truck being a driver except for driving it in the wintertime. Diddo for the vent windows and the cowl vent.
Don't listen to 4speed. It looks bitchin' but I can't see giving up the utility of a vent wing window! It's one of the koolest things about vintage cars/trucks.
Hey Andrew, did you get your cab painted? Did you stuff it downstairs with everything else?
Your correct it does look pretty cool although, mounting the cab to the garage wall like you did is quite different. It does give the cab character . Just kidding
Just for the record, I think that no vent window's look stupid on a close to stock appearing truck. Your truck, your mods, your money, my opinion -4speed oh one6day, thats my 1960 airbagged box truck. Look closely and you will see
