The Microsoft Security Center is a bit annoying but not too hard to disable, Other than that, some select Dell Inspiron laptops actually run slower after installing it, and of course there are a few software packages that will not work after installing it, but the README.HTM should contain info about those packages. Most of them are related to network software such as Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate edition.
I recommend it to anyone who uses a WiFi network as well. They enhanced quite a bit of the wifi security with sp2.
I'm one of the Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop users, and it does slow it down, just a teeny bit at start up. But working with it, it's just as fast as it ever was. The upgrades to the Windows WiFi are great, really makes things easy to see the what & why when WiFi acts up. I also like the IE pop-up blocker, works good!
Tried to update a HP Pavilion, and it freaked out. Very buggy and s-l-o-w on that machine. Uninstalled it, and everything was right again.
The Inspiron 2100 (i think) would go from 2.8ghz to 300mhz, due to a fauly cpu.sys file on upgrade. the dell forums at http://support.dell.com have a lot of information on how to "rollback" that driver to the sp1 driver so you dont have a massive speed decrease
They say it takes 4-6 weeks, but I got mine in about a week and a half.
Thanks so much for the link! I also only have a dialup connection and the last time I ran any updates it took me over 11 hours (stayed up all night!!). I didn't want to have to do that again!
I downloaded it on my 1.5 Gh P3 XP Pro system. No problems or complaints. As "Munkey" stated, the IE popup blocker is great and works well.
The only complication I had was, for some reason, I couldn't play video in Windows Media Player after the install. I remedied it by installing an updated ATI driver for my video card and now everything's back to normal.
My download was 105mb. I believe the download is anywhere from 64 to 275mb depending upon what you have installed and how up to date you are.
I do have one of the applications that was supposed to work "differently", Extra Personnel Client 6.5. So far I have not had any problems with it. YMMV.
I have turned off all the new M$ security features (firewall) as I already a have firewall that stops incoming and outgiong intrusions. The M$ firewall is only one way. It will stop only incoming intrusions (maybe?).
As far as other slowdowns, the boot up seems to be about the same, but the shutdown takes longer.
I will always use some other product as a firewall as for some reason, security and M$ seems to be an oxymoron.
You probably went to windowsupdate. I have multiple computers at my house and figured i'd just download the entire 275mb update as its easier to copy it to each computer rather than download it on each. The ms firewall can block outgoing ports as well. It is classic for stopping FTP programs from functioning properly till you disable it.
Danged, can't believe the response, in less than an hour. I had been hearing pro's and con's about it. As I usually do, I decided I'd never know until I tried. So, had just downloaded myself before I posted.
By the way, I have dial up, believe it took about 4 1/2 hours.
