Hello all, Let me start by saying I know pretty much nothing about automobiles. I have a 1996 ford Ranger with RABS I have read many previous posts, but am looking for advice on an ABS light that came on a couple of days ago. Initially, it came on while i was driving and, now goes on before I even take the truck out of park. I checked the float and made sure the reservoir is full of fluid. I just replaced all pads and rotors 5 months ago. Is there anythign I can check before I go to the dealer or a local mechanic (I have a "charge me as much as possible" sticker on my forehead). Thanks in advance!
If you look in the sticky at the top of the forum, you will see one with tech information. Look in there for pulling the codes on the RABS. Pulling codes is the next step in diagnosing the problem.
It could very well be your Vehicle Speed Sensor! It can cause all sorts of problems, ranging from failed speedometer to even horrible transmission malfunction (which was the case for me). Often, it begins going out slowly by throwing on your ABS light for apparently no reason at all. The following link is the thread with my situation:
A very easy fix, if that's what it is. Under $30 for the VSS at your local dealer (I think it's called Rear Axle Sensor or something like that on their records), and takes about 5 minutes to do. It's that "L" shaped thing sticking out of the top-middle of your rear axle with a cord connected to it.
