coolant leak-freezout plug

Found a rear freezout plug leaking bad. It is the one at the rear of the engine. You need to remove the interior motor access to get to it. It is behind the coil bracket. Anybody got an easy way to pull this plug out? Right now I had to put stop leak in the engine so I could use the truck. Sat. I would like to replace the plug. Thanks.

I used a hammer and screwdriver on one edge and forced it part way in. Then grabbed it with pliers and extracted.....

It is probably all rust on the back side. Just use a screwdriver in the center and pry enough material towards yourself. Then just use pliers to pull it out. More than likely will come out in a few pieces.
If one is bad, the others are prolly bad also......Your call......

HTH..

@ reever:

I had the same problem and replaced both of the ones in back. Do you know how many freeze plugs are on the block? I have been under my 90 3.0 because I have a leak behind the A/C compressor. I looked at both sides of the block and I count three on the drivers side. On the opposite side I can only see one towards the back of the block. Is there one behind the compressor mounting bracket or is the leak possible coming from a head gasket???

If I remember, there are 3 on each side, 2 in both the back and front. Its been a few years since that repair. Do a search on freeze plugs in this forum. You should come up with tons o' info....
The leak behind the Compressor could be the waterpump. There are some bolts that go thru the pump into the waterjacket. I remember someone else here having that problem thinking it was the freeze plugs on the side and it wound up being the water pump. Something else to at least think about....

The Block uses 5 of them that are 1 1/2"
1 on the driver's side, 2 on the passenger's side & 2 at the back-end of the block

The Heads use 4 of them that are 1 1/4"
1 at each end of the heads.

Replace them with Brass Ones. They won't rust out. Also if one goes the others are not far behind.

Clean the hole with a brake hone, Then install your new ones. Do not use any sealant on the new ones.

well. When mine went out, it was the forward most one on the passenger side. its crammed up in there behind everything, so I couldnt get at it with any tools, I was lucky to get my chubby hands on it.

after some long pondering. I figured Id get some steel epoxy putty, and plug it up that way.

I drained it and dried it out as much as possible. and crammed as much of that putty in the tiny hole as I could, I then puttyed over the whole recess of the plug for good measure.

it still dripped a TINY bit. so I threw in some stop leak, and it hasnt leaked since.

i wasnt going to tear apart my whole motor to change out a $1 part, nor was I going to pay the shop $375 in labor either. so, my own sweat and $3 worth of putty and stop leak worked for me.

one of these days it will leak again for sure. but it workls for now!

Was under the van today looking at the oxygen sensor location, and noticed a little green fluid, antifreeze, dripping along the underside of the oil filter. Could this be coming from a leaking freeze plug?

Go get a pressure checker and you will know for sure. You can rent or see if they will let you take it outside to check, Most will.
