Camshaft rear plug

I have a 400 that was rebuilt by the previous owner relatively recently. After powerwashing off all the grease, I noticed the large diameter plug at the rear of the block (the rear of the camshaft) was leaking a bit of oil. I have read that the FE engines have this plug installed with the concavity TOWARDS the engine: i.e. the opposite of a normal freeze plug.

Is this true for the 351M/400 as well and is that why mine has a small leak?

It may have been installed dry. I like to put Permatex #2 on it.

x2 on the permatex. Great stuff. Is it the sticky tar stuff in a little tub with a brush like we get?

Yep. Don't get it on you or you'll wear it off. Get it on your clothes and it doesn't come off. Been there, done both - many times.

Last time I went into a parts store I had to take the young kid to the Permatex display and show him what it looks like.
