I recently purchased a 1994 Eddie Bauer with 132k miles on it and decided to test out to the truck to make sure everything was still in decent working order. When I got down to testing the 4x4 we just went to a parking lot [not much 4 wheeling in Jersey where I live until winter] and engaged the push button 4 wheel drive. The light came on and all that, but when I started to roll forward it seemed as if the hubs didn't rotate and lock into place. They are supposed to [so says the manual] but I am a little skeptical seeing as how these are manual hubs. Anyone know if they are even supposed to auto-lock? Or am I correct in thinking you need to get out and lock the hubs manually after engaging the 4x4 system?
Manual locking hubs need to be locked outside. Then once your done wheeling I believe you have to do a little reverse. I am not sure though. I am sure someone who knows will chime in soon.
Ok thanks for the advice, the manual said I would need to reverse to disengage , but it also said they would autolock, which is why I'm a little confused.
Check the hubs to be certain they haven't been replaced with manuals. The auto-locking hubs will have a smooth surface and no provision for turning a ****/dial to engage the locking mechanism. Maunals will have such a **** or dial with two indicators on the edge of the hub showing where the **** is to be positioned for both the locked and "free" positions.
Yes they are manuals, I think the [manual] just had a mistake in it with the type of hubs it had. Thanks for the clearing up, more posts to follow, as I;m not certain on everything on the truck yet
The hubs were probably changed by the previous owner. Manuals are stronger than the auto hubs and give you the piece of mind that the front end is infact unlocked or locked. It would not make sense for Ford to put manual hubs and push button 4x4 on the same truck but they have done stranger things. If they are stock the hubs will say Ford on them.
lock in the hubs prior to use, after locked in, push the button to 4x4 hi or low. push back to 2hi before you unlock the hubs while the truck is rolling. you should not push anything except 2hi when unlocked. backing up to disengage is for auto hubs. manuals are unlocked when you turn them to "free" and you don't have to back up. you may or may not here them click
