hi guys, has anyone bought/fitted/used either a GEARVENDORS or US GEAR under/overdrive setup ? with fuel around $1.20 ltr and dearer further west , i am starting to concider options and thought the option of splitting gears whilst towing, along with either single or double overdrive while empty, may be a good idea.
problem is though, either type is thin on the ground over here, and speaking with one of the salt racers they don't use them either, at over 4 grand a pop, i need to make an educated decision based on experience not sales talk.
any thoughts?
with the old girl being fitted with a 4 speed, updating to a 5 speed isn't that much cheaper than the option of a splitter type box, with the added advantage of gear splitting when towing on the coast ,(where they do have hills), besides if i sell this vehicle and they don't want to pay extra, i can just pull the box, bolt the original extension housing back on, and keep this unit for the next one.
i know it is a lot of money, but out here it's a 1 hour drive each way to see a movie ( highway travel) or a dentist, so i thought the fuel savings may over time pay for it.

A buddy of mine has run a few of the Gear Vendors ODs. He ran them behind a Dually F-350 with a Banks turbocharged IH diesel. Pulled an enclosed car trailer with a Vette inside. My guess is they can't be too weak to put up with that. He had it for years. That's the closest I have to experience with them. I think they are well under $3000 in the US.
So what would happen if you put a second 4 speed tranny in backwards. Take off the bellhouseing. Connect with a short shaft between the two? Then a drive shaft to the rearend. Then 4th would be the original 1:1 and the rest of the gears would be overdrive gears. Shifting of the second unit would have to be done stopped but it would work.
