I have a 2000 PSD that I use to pull a 28 foot 5th wheel and jeep. While traveling to Colorado I noticed that when I would take the truck out of overdrive while pulling in the hills there was an unusual loud roar coming from the engine compartment. I first thought that the fan clutch was going out (but I just replaced it last week) because the roar would almost go away and then come right back and it would do that constantally. If I put the truck back in overdrive the roar goes away. I do not want to pull the hills and moutains in overdrive but do not know what if any harm that whatever is causing this roar is causing either. I do not know if it is the torque converter because when the roar is present there is no change in RPM's and I can not feel any shifting problems. The truck does not feel like it is hunting for gears when in overdrive on flat ground. I really do not know how to explain it but I hope someone can help.
Yep, it's your fan. The reason you tend to hear it in 3rd is because you rpm's are a lot higher compared to 4th, moving a lot more air. Don't worry about it, just keep it towing that Jeep.
There is hills in Colorado? Man I wanna see what you call mountains lol! Just like they said...Its your fan. All is good and keep doin what that Ford is ment to do....Pull that Jeep up the mountians!
Yup, Fan clutch is working fine. It's when you DON'T hear the roaring is when you should be concerned.
Heck here in SoCal if I hear the fan I get concerned LOL, it's pretty flat and I only hear it in the summer, and only if I'm haulin weight or azz LOL..
thanks for the info guys. and I call them mountains since I am from Oklahoma (LOL) just one more question on this is it normal for the fan clutch to stop making the noise when I put the truck back in overdrive. Just to see what it would do I did this while pulling some grades (notice I did not say maoutains LOL) and the roar went away but as soon as I turned the overdrive off the roar came back. Truck is pulling fine and there seems to be no loss of power. I have made several trips to Colorado with this smae set up and this never happened. granted the last few times I have went the temp has not been hotter than H___L but still driving same route.
if this has been something that has developed over time, meaning the fan is coming on more than it used to on the same hills pulling the same load then you may indeed have an issue.
I would throw a water temp gauge on it and take a look at actual water temp. The gauge on the dash is little more than an idiot light and does not give an accurate reading of cooling temp.
At least 2 members on this board have had cooling issues of late and it turned out to be a plugged radiator in both cases. They seamed to flow fine until put to an actual flow test at a radiator shop and then they showed they where actually restricted.
The cooling system in these trucks was one of the things Ford way over built so even if it is failing it may still be working alright.....
I guess what I am trying to say is it's your truck, you know it better than us...if the fan is coming on more than it used to pulling the same grade, same load etc you MAY indeed have an issue.
Mine has been making a roaring sound recently. I thought it was my turbo on its way out, partly because it seems my boost pressures are not what they should be (seldom over 5-7 psi). But I think I've heard that summer temps reduce boost.

turbo does not sound bad and we left alamosa this morning temp was 53 truck ran fine no roar all the way to lake city. So I am guessing that the high temps in ok. had something to do with it. Do not know if I mentioned it before but the roar was upa nd down quickly yesterday. I think I will have the radiator checked when I get back because even though the fan clutch may be working right something just does not feel right. Thanks for all the info you guys are the best.m
