P0743
symptoms:
-CEL P0743
-Long shift from 1st to 2nd (2000-2400 RPMs)
-Trans spit fluid from vent onto exhaust one time
-only 16,000 miles on transmission and TC (rebuilt unit)
The CEL came on with a P0743 code. Transmission OD light will sometimes flash also. Also a bad smell and some smoke came from under the passenger front area of car last week.
Mechanic told me the torque converter was slipping and was causing the fluid to overheat and spit out of the vent onto the exhaust pipes causing the bad smell and the smoke. This has only happened one time before but not as severe as this time.
At this point i'm unsure what to do....I was told i needed a new trans from one shop and another shop said that the problem is in the transmission wiring somewhere and that the trans is probably OK and not damaged.

Chances are pretty good the problem is the wiring where it goes into the transmission or the TCC solenoid itself which is in the valve body.
-When you say to check the wiring going into the transmission, do you mean the wiring harness?
-Can the TCC solenoid be tested?
-Would a bad or loose wire cause the code plus the long upshift from 1st to 2nd?
-If the solenoid is bad would that also cause the code?
-Sorry i have so many questions on this, but i do not want to spend $1300 or more on this trans if it's only a wire or solenoid issue. The Ford dealership wants $82 to diagnois the code. thanks.

A TCC problem shouldn't cause your shifting problem but depending on what the problem turns out to be it could be related. For instance if the connector on the side of the transmission was loose it could give you both problems.
The TCC solenoid can be tested with an ohm meter. It should be 10-16 ohms. You wont know if it is actually working though without a transmission tester which is something your dealer has.
I think that $82 to diagnose it is probably a good deal.
