Oil pump Ticking

I just installed a new oil pump, the old one was fine but i needed to replace the oil pan gasket, so i did both. But now when i first start the motor I get a ticking for a few seconds. I notice that it goes away after my oil pressure gauge goes up. If i shut the motor off and restart it, It doesnt happen again. Only if I let it sit for about a half hour or more. Both screws were tourqed down to spects. Any ideas? Oil pressure is good no problems there. 95 inline six.

Some oil filters have anti-drainback valves that leak. The leaky valve allows the oil to slowly drain back from the engine to the pan. When you start the engine after it has been setting awhile, it takes a little time to re-fill the filter and get oil up to the lifters.

There is an older thread on this site that addresses the problem. I had the same problem that was fixed by replacing a Fram filter with a MotorCraft filter. If thats your problem, its a cheap fix. Good Luck.

I got to thinking, could it be where the pick up tube and the oil pump meet is leaking, all the oil is draining out of the pump and taking a few seconds to fill back up. I started thinking about it and there wasnt a gasket to put between the two.

I didn't touch the oil filter or pickup tube when I did the pan on my 300 but I had to just now on my 351w. I would assume they're the same basic idea. There was no gasket between the pump and the block (pressure side) but there was definitely one between the pump and the tube (vacuum side). I made sure to clean the surfaces up perfectly and use a new gasket WITH NO SILICONE!!! From what I understand, if a piece of silicone gets into the oil pump it will lock the pump up and goodbye pump drive shaft, oil pressure and engine. That stuff is tough when it cures and will not displace, and the oil pump tolerances are very close. That's another reason to use a quality one piece oil pan gasket and no silicone there either. With the pump screen you have a chance of that catching chunks of silicone before it gets in the pump but even if it does you don't want crap caught in the screen.
