how tough is it to replace the timing chain on a 4.6 triton? i have a haynes manual and plenty of know how, but i havent done a timing chain before. my truck is making a tick tick tick tick at idle. it can be heard clearly coming from the upper left hand side of the motor (from the front) by putting a long stick or screw driver on the timing cover. it sounds like the timing chain is loose and hitting something in there. also when i started it this morning the oil pressure fell to zero, then back up to normal a few times before staying normal, which led me to beleive the oil pump was making the noise, but it is definitely coming from the upper part of the engine. thanks for any help, the dealer wants $1200 to replace it, so i want to try everything i can first.

It's unlikely that the chain has a problem-I've seen several with 250K+ miles that were still like new. It's probably gonna be the tensioner-those are known to have issues on some trucks. The timing cover and cam covers must come off, along with the power steering pump, and harmonic damper.. It's about a 8-10 hour job for the average guy with a manual and tools.

A few questions for you.
What year is the truck?
How many miles on the engine?
Does the ticking go away (or get quieter) when it warms up?
What type & weight oil are you running?
Depending upon the mileage and the weight of the oil, going up in the oil's weight and type (try synthetic) could be the easy fix.
On a 91 Thunderbird w/the 3.8L I had a clicking type noise comeing from what I thought was the power steering pump. It wasn't. Ended up being the alternator bearing going out.
Back in the day I had a great running 71 Ranchero w/a 302 that started to tap and the oil pressure idiot light would come on intermittently whilst it tapped.
I decided that it had to be the oil pump and changed it out one weekend. Didn't fix a thing......
Ends up that I had a loose valve that was causing the ticking and a simple adjustment fixed that and replaceing the oil pressure sender fixed my oil idiot light problem .
Anyways it may not be as serious as an 8 to 10 hr (or $1200) fix....
