My friend owns a truck accessory shop and currently has a Hypertech Stage 3 programmer for my 2002 7.3PSD he'll sell me for $350. I haven't heard many people rave about this programmer. The highest setting says the HP increase is 100HP and the torque increase is 164 ft.-lbs. What is so bad about this programmer. It's just one of those things were its on the shelf and calling my name vs. I won't go and order one since I'll be trading the truck within a year.
I would advise to put gauges in the truck before anything, and do not buy the hypertech, as they are a step below %#$&..... Since you are selling the truck I would not waste the time getting an air intake and exhaust but these simple things might persuade you to keep the truck. As for the programmer I would get a Predator or a SCMT. BUT NOT BEFORE THE GAUGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Read thew forums a little more and you will see the big three No No's are (the Hypertech, drop in K&N filter, and worst yet is the mods done with no gauges!!!) I personally know a few people who now have blown motors due to these three no no's. I cannot afford to replace my truck or motor just to save about 20 bucks on a cheap progammer with a history of destroying the motor. That is why I am anti-Hypertech.
I read through the archives concerning the hypertech programmer, I found a few users who thought the hypertech did not raise the horsepower as much as some of the others, but I did not find anyone who blamed them for an engine malfunction. I read several posts from users who were very pleased with their results. I am not trying to start a debate, I would like to hear from someone who has really had a serious problem from the hypertech. If there is a potencial problem I will quit using mine. The programmer I have is the Three stage Hypertech.
I realize you are not trying to start a debate. I am just trying to save someone else from the problems some of my friends/acquaintences have had. There is probably a reason you are a little hard pressed to find a lot of hypertech users here..... If you are problem free that is great! Truly it is, but you are in the minority. Call up any specialty shop that sells more then pne programmer and ask them which one would be a safe buy.
I have one!The problem, If you have the Stage 3 setting loaded after you turn your switch off, It puts the speed limiter back on the truck. It's real time consuming to have to go through all the programming again to have alittle Fun. I know alot of folks that wish I didn't have it...
The Hypertech Programmer III has been around for quite a while. What most don't know is that there have been several generations of programmers all called the same thing. (not a good marketing scheme on Hypertech's part IMHO). The programmers that came out in 2004 (second generation I think) were a huge improvement over the previous ones. I have heard of folks having issues with the earlier ones. I have a second generation and have been running it on the 100 hp setting every day for over a year with no problems. I have never had serious issues with EGT's (only what you would expect, ie, heavy trailer in mountains) or any other problems. I do not believe that it gives 100 hp or for that matter nearly as much as some of the others, but they are not a bad unit from my experience. If I were to buy one now, I probably buy something else to get the biggest bang for the buck. I am currently planning on purchasing a chip from Jody at DP-Tuners.
