A buddy of mine gave me a programmer made by hypertech and it is for my 2000 f350 sd 7.3l. I tried running it but it came up with and error after running it's program 100%. Does hypertech require a chip to go with the programmer and is it worth buying it if so. How much would one cost ?
Is it an old style Hypertech or a new one? I have one like this:
This one should be ready to go out of the box, not sure about the new ones. You could contact Hypertech if it's giving you a error code or something like that.
hypertech has a great tech department, i have delt with them in the past and they have been good to deal with. one thing to keep in mind, the old style programmers cannot program more than one unit. if your buddy did not return his truck to stock that programmer will not work on yours. before you call hypertech get your friends vin number of off his truck and see if you can get the pcm code. i had a problem with mine a few years ago and they said as long as it had the matching pcm code for my vin number they would fix it. they ended up sending me a brand new unit.
Run away. Run quickly away, from that Hypertech programmer. Especially if you do not have gauges installed.
I had one for 6 months many, many moon ago...and hated it. If you ask it to firm up your shifts, your transmission is going to drop into the next gear like a bowling ball hitting the floor. Also, without gauges, you will not know if it is increasing your EGTs into the dangerous levels. Of course, this is true with any chip or tuner. While Hypertech is likely very "safe," the performance you're going to get isn't much better than a $5 10k resistor modification.
Sell the Hypertech, and spend the money on opening up your intake and exhaust first, then maybe a high pressure oil crossover hose ($50). After that, buy some gauges, and eventually a decent tuner or chip.
I'm not being a modification snob...I personally would prefer a stock truck over one with the Hypertech running. Heck, now that I'm thinking about it, I got worse mileage with the Hypertech as well. With a decent tuner or chip, your mileage will improve.

thanks for the info...I did call hypertech and they said the data on my pcm was to current for the programmer data and wouldn't work...probably for the best in the long run..I think I will look into a couple of those mod you are talking about
