Play in 1356 transfer case

I posted this in the differential/x-fer case forum but got little feed back. So I figured I would try it here.

I have an 1990 F150 with a Borg Warner 13-56 transfer case in it. I get a fairly loud clunk when putting in gear or going from drive to reverse or visa versa. I have determined that the play is within the x-fer case. I took the drive shaft loose and removed the tail shaft extension. I then turned the shaft by hand and can feel and hear the play within the case. It seems to work fine. Can this play be a problem? Will I have to replace gears within the case to fix the problem? Or is it possible that bushings or bearings are worn causeing the back lash within the gears? Would a standard rebuild solve the problem?

My 13-56 is a chain drive. Sounds like yours is stretched. Usually noticed when a poping noise is heard when locked up. The sooner you replace the chain the better as it will eat the sprocket teeth if used too much in this condition. The case doesn't have to come off the truck, I was able to get at mine by removing the rear drive and the torx head bolts to remove the back half of the case. Look over the oil pump carefully as they give lots of grief. Just my 2 bits...Good luck

It has the play in 2wd. The play in the chain wouldn't be noticeable in 2wd would it?

Sorry Bronco guy, I re-read your original post, yer right.... I haven't run into such a thing on the outputshaft to the rear wheels, but if I remember right, my 1356 drive to the rear is through a planetary gearset. Maybe drain out the oil and look for remains of a gear or broken teeth??
