I'm going to need to tow my 1990 F350 with an E4OD and BW1356 for about 250 miles. I have towed all of my other vehicles thousands of miles but they are manuals so I just leave the transfer case in gear and the tranny in neutral. Since this one is an auto, I can't just leave the tranny in neutral.
So the question is, where does the oil pump drive in these BW1356 transfer cases? If I leave it in neutral so only the output shaft is spinning, will the oil pump be driven or is it driven off the input shaft?
If I were going that far I would unbolt the drive shafts and wire them up. Going that far you may damage the E40D, The transmission pump is driven off the torque converter which only spins when the engine is running
The oil pump is on the main output shaft and will pump all the time with driveshaft turning. When in neutral the planetery is disengaged and not spinning which is where the pump pumps oil to. Still though id pull the drive shaft just for total piece of mind for just a few minutes of work.
Put the transfer case in Neutral and hit the road! Won't damage anything, when the transfer case is in Neutral, nothing turns except the t-case and rear shaft, you can even leave the transmission in Park if it makes you feel better.
