88 150, 300/6 5 speed mazda tranny. 227,000 miles...
new clutch 1 year ago (5000 miles)
2 questions. Mazda trannys... known problems?
Low on oil would cause klunking sounds?
Sound only came after the tranny was in 4th or 5th gear. My wife drove it today. Seems everytime it popped the vehicles ahead of her would pull over and the people would hop out and look at their tires! heheh
However my wife kept right on driving the old truck home.
tonite I checked the rear end finding it low on oil I added maybe half cup.
Checked the driveshaft and the bolts at the rear end's U-joint.
Added maybe a pint of 90weight to the tranny too.
Drove it after and didn't hear the noise.... hmmmm.
howdy! this is one of those "she says, he says" as the popping sounds came while my wife was driving. My brother-in-law who was the original owner said the same thing back in the early 90's. He had some troubles with the mazda tranny and gave a leetle greif to the Ford Parts counter about the idea of a mazda tranny in a FORD.
I had the U-joints replaced earlier this year, thot maybe one of them was defective. Everything looks solid and tight.
Tons of miles on this californian desert truck. Using it everyday up here in the northland.
thanks
The Mazda trannies aren't made for gear oil; they require ATF. Gear oil does bad things to them. From what I hear: Make sure the tranny has ATF and the shifter bushings are OK (no play), don't shift it fast, and it should give good service.
He said/she said? These trucks glide over road defects that threaten to tear other cars apart. Everyone else pulled over to check thier tires; I suspect there was some road damage (potholes?) that caused people to pull over, not your clunking truck.
Could be a broken bed mount; a bump in the road could cause a good clunk when the bed meets the frame again.
Didn't occur to me that the trannys take ATF! So I was looking at the Clymer manual and all I could find was use the "appropiate" oil! hehe
I have tried to duplicate the sounds by driving the truck, however no noise to my ears either. Sometimes women can hear higher or differnt frequencies than men.
thanks for the comments. The truck although plenty of miles is in great shape. nice to work on a vehicle where the bolts aren't rusted with Minnesota salt!
Yeap I am with you on the noises, however I believe my wife when she states that 2 cars pulled to the side of the road and were looking at their vehicles!
Kind of funny in one way isn't it?
