Crossbows for dummies

I’d like to get into bow hunting again, but thought I’d check into crossbows. They’re now legal to use here in GA, not to mention my bad shoulder probably won’t hold up to a lot of compound bow practice. I don’t want to spend a fortune, so what’s a decent brand/model? What’s a reasonable FPS? I see they can get up to as much as 350 FPS or better, but is all that really necessary? Would a 250 or 270 do the job? What are some features to look for? Scope? Sights? Parallel or cross-quiver? I’m hearing there are a couple different kinds of trigger/release mechanisms…what are the advantages? I’m only slightly more knowledgeable about compound bows but even that knowledge is about 10 years out of date...so basically I’m starting all over again. The guys I hunt with are real “gear-hounds” and won’t hunt with anything less than state of the art stuff…shoot, I thought it was called primitive weapons for a reason. Anyway, I appreciate your wisdom and advice.

Wow...I guess I found something on FTE that nobody either knows anything about or has an opinion about. That's gotta be a first!

Wow...it really does appear that nobody on FTE knows anything about crossbows. I'm in utter amazement

I read a test on them one time, also stayed in a motel 6. , but I digress. As I recall, there is such a drop in the arrow that you really need to know the exact range of the target. Also think the arrow is called a bolt, why I don't know. It does not have threads on it.

Ha Ha ...thanks Mike. Sounds like you may actually know about as much about crossbows as I do. Besides the FPS thing, I've noticed that the bolts can vary by length...from 15" up to 22". Actually in the 22" range they go back to calling them arrows. Is one size better than the other for hunting? There's also the ft lbs. in energy factor...faster arrow/bolt speed doesn't always seem to equate to more down range energy. The manufacturers also seem to make a big deal about power stroke (no, not the diesel ). And greater draw weight doesn't allways equate to greater speed or down range energy. Let's not even get into the particulars of the arrows/bolts yet...that seems to be a whole other (although related) science. Thanks for the try Mike...I was beginging to wonder if I had been black-listed somehow.

I just happened to notice your location. I spent a couple of years in Wahewa, while in the Navy. Gas off base was $.75.

Mike,
Actually I need to get that changed. I moved away from there about a year ago. I'm in the AF and got reassigned to GA. Actually I should say "back" to GA...I was stationed here before HI...had the opportunity to come back...didn't think about it twice. HI was nice but it's a lot nicer for me being back in the good ole south.

crossbows?

Ive been hunting for years with one. If you're not going for grizzlies....150lb draw weight will do. Its good for deer bear and moose. Horton makes good quality bows and a little cheaper than most.I use a Horton Legend 175lb. Never had a minutes problem with it.
