The guys who do it professionally make it look so easy, I'm jealous. What really blows me away is watching a crew apply plaster and skim out a full room in no time with minimal sanding after.

Anyway, I used plastic corner bead with staples. Seems to be holding ok. I used regular paper tape.
The wide drywall knife is one other key. Figure if a seem is going to have about 4" of mud on it, a 10" knife is what you need, as it will go wider than you think by the time you feather out the edges.
Sanding sponges worked well also, especially for corners, inside corners especially.
All that and a tolerant, detail oriented painter to cover the sins you miss.
