Hello: I have a '73 F-250 2wd w/c-6 tranny. It shifted pretty well, leaked a bit of fluid. I was backing up with a good load on (piano), when it quit moving and there was a sudden cloud of fluid around the truck and a puddle under. I did manage to get it to move enough to unload, then shut it off and let it cool down. Later I drove it into the back yard and parked it for a week. Looking under it shows no fluid on rear. It' mostly leaked around the crossmember and a little got on the header pipe so itsmokes when you start it. I tried it after the week and it engaged okay in drive and reverse, but no fluid is showing on the dipstick (so I shut it down quickly). What's the most likely cause of my problem? It really seemed like some seal, gasket or line that was under pressure blew, but I don't know much about trannies. Is it likely just a gasket or o-ring, or am I looking at having to replace or rebuild it? Could this be an on-the-truck repair, or will it need to come out? Thanks!! mark73f250
Mark,
I've only seen this happen once before and the chevy T-350 was trashed. When the tranny overheats, it boils the fluid and it vents out the top of the tranny somewhere. It blows all over the place and makes a mess. Usually you''ll loose the top gear (3rd). Change your fluid. Is the old fluid black? If so, it's probably time for a rebuild, or at least get the valve body cleaned out.
Good Luck,
