ok that's cool! i always wondered what MFI stood for, cuz appartently my truck has it, lol w/e but i was wondering what the difference is??
between FI EFI and MFI
heh. That was a joke. MFI is multiport fuel injection. That's what our trucks have. Each cylinder has its own fuel injector. As opposed to GM's throttle body injection, where fuel is injected into the throttle body, much like a carb.
Mechanical fuel injection also is real, as the 50's saw some use, the old Corvettes with Feulie heads, in essence, 2.02 heads were initially fuel injected. Volkswagen Audi, and Porsche are a few that also used it with success into the late 80's, early 90's. I know, there are more, like Volvo that used it too, and Mercedes as well, but I was only giving examples, not naming every company that used it.
Ford uses 2 versions in the late model vehicles. EFI Electronic Fuel Injection (yes it is multiport, one injector per cylinder) and SEFI Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection.
The trucks (at least 85-96) used Batch fired EFI. This means that it fires one bank of injectors at a time. Mustangs and Lincoln Mark VII's used SEFI. It fires 1 injector at a time. The roller cam HO motors used this. Hyd. flat tappet engines usually used the Batch fire set-up.
Confused yet?
Early 80's Ford EFI was the TBI. Throttlebody injection. Used from the early 80's until 86 on most Ford vehicles.
