timming chain off a tooth

i have 90 fi50 4x4 w/ 302efi engine in it about 4 months ago i had to change the water pump out so i went ahead and changed the timming chain also. well every since then i have had a problem w/ spark nock. i have changed the wires cap and button. i actually took and put it in a shop just to make sure i had the timming correct. the shop said everything looked fine to him as far as avancing and all. well sat. i was telling my cousin about the problem and he said that he run into the same problem in fairlane a few months back and it turned out to be that the timming chain was off a tooth. well i have decided to go back in to check this out sinice i have run out of ideas for what could be causing the problem. my questions is that besides looking at the dots on the gears is there another method that can be used, like counting links in the chain, or rotating the motor 360 to see if the dots line back up again? any help will be apperciated thanks.

it doesn't matter at all how many links are in the chain, as long as there is no slack in it. What matters is how many teeth in the gears (2:1 ratio). As long as the dots are lined up correctly and the chain isn't slack, 2 rotations of the crank shaft on a 4-stroke motor will put it right back where you started. The engine can "jump" time only when the chain is too loose, the gears are worn (or it wasn't set right to start with).
