I have an edelbrock intake and 500 cfm carb on my '81 or '82 302. It has a clear fuel filter. the filter always has a little fuel in it, maybe an 8th full. but never fills up. Is this normal or do I have fuel issues? The truck starts hard, usually a few minutes of cranking and pumping the gas. But I haven't started it more than once a month. All the emissions is removed, and the ignition is all new, Durospark 2. Should I try a new fuel pump.
With some of your emissions removed, that may be the problem of the hard starts...but the fuel filter container should be some air in it as its not pressurize...
I have a clear filter on my 460. With the engine running (idle) it's only about 1/2 full. When I shut it off, some of the fuel drains out of the line, so it's about maybe 1/4 full.
Could you help me understand how the emissions would cause hard starts. Its all been removed or disconected and plugged, haven't found any vacuum leaks.
What about starter solenoid, everheard of it causing symptoms like this?
I'd like to plow 1 more year with this truck, but starten to get sick charging the battery, and throwing money at it. Next year I couldstart rebuilding it.
Well with the truck sitting for a month or more the fuel will drain out of the fuel bowlsin the carb and it will take awhile to fill them back up, also a bad choke will do this as well.
From what I understand, some of the 460 models have what is called a "hot fuel system" or something like that. Anyway, the idea was to provide a return route to the tanks for non needed fuel, preventing hot starts etc. If you were to have a small fuel leak in one of your lines it would do the same thing.
All ford trucks have a fuel return line, mostly for emissions reasons, and as a results most lines got chopped off when working on them cause they can become a pian.
Well, I fixed some bad wires and replaced the ignition switch, see my other thread "broken wire drains battery". then I ran a length of fuel line from the pump to a 5 gal. can on the ground. Shot alittle starting fluid in the carb. flicked the key, boom! it fired right up. I opened the choke, and it didn't die. And fuel filter is almost full. For this winter I'll rig up the 5 gallon can in the bed, I can't drive this beast on the road anyhow. Get a new gas tank next year.
