I would agree that both would be very similar in hp, now it comes down to drive train and what body you would be running and what mods were allowed. Save that for another post
Why is it then, the average "street hero" ,still opts to build up the chevy over a ford? There has to be some common denominator, be it cost, plain dislike for the ford power plant or ???

I'm not seeing it. The most prolific street machine(save imports) is the 5.0 Mustang. There are at least 3 sanctioned Ford bodies right now for drag racing.
There's a moderator on corral.net who is the poster child for my reasoning. He had a bad a$$ LS1 firebird but traded it for a '99 Cobra(I know, not a 5.0) because of the sheer events he can run. He also states many quality reasons but that's another post also.
I'm not sure where you've been, but there are MORE suspension parts and aftermarket tuners for the Fox and SN95 platform than ANY car out there right now.
Want to go fast on a budget??? Now you're including platform as well as motor?? (actually a very smart move) The '79 to present Mustang cannot be beat for sheer parts availability and price.
Although ,I agree there are loads of aftermarket parts for them.
This was the original post:
Why does it cost less to install, build, or buy a cheby engine (in particular a 350)? Since Ford has been the best selling truck for 20 something years I thought it would cost less than Cheby. I am not looking for responses like Chevy sucks, or Ford rules, but a logical answer because I cannot figure this out myself!
I guess it comes down to where you shop.

Agree 100%. I think that's why it floored me when you brought up $30,000 race motors.
