Household Appliances

Well, the wife and I sold our condo and are getting a house (Yeay, I finally get a GARAGE!!!). We are going to have to put most of the profit from the sale down to get into the house, but I believe it's worth the money. Anyway, we are going to have a few thousand left over and need some new appliances. The house has a brand new dishwasher and a new stove, so we are just going to need a refrigerator and a washer and dryer. We shopped around a little bit and this is what we found:

1. Best Buy had some neat looking appliances, but nobody seemed too interested in us, so we left.
2. We went to Sears and were helped almost immediately. I was impressed with the knowledge of the sales staff and their willingness to spend some time with us, even though we told them that we hadn't yet closed and weren't buying right away.
3. Front loading washers use about one-third the water of a top loading washers.

So, unless somebody can tell me why I shouldn't shop for these things at Sears, that's probably where we will end up buying.

So, bring on the opinions!! (and Thanks)

STU

I like Sear's stuff. My washer and drier are about 16 years old, and going strong still. Dishwasher is about 15, and no problems.

Parts and service are available.

sears has a good reputation...a good selection and service....price is a tiny bit higher but well worth what you get in return.....

We've got a Kenmore fridge that would have been new in 1984, still works great. Had a Kenmore dishwasher that we just replaced last fall, only 'cause the timer quit working. I'd go back to Sears for any of the major appliances.

I've always used top-loading washers. Dunno about the water difference. Washing clothes is pretty small portion of the water we use anyway, and at least here, water isn't hard to come by. Especially this year.

wow, this thread wasn't supposed to be a "do you like Sears" poll! (LOL)
Not one person has said anything negative about them yet. Thanks for all the input- but does anyone have experience with the front loading washers? Do you like/dislike them? And what about the warranty plan kenmore offers? They have a 1 year warranty, but should I think about getting an extended plan?

The U.S. government is basically banning production of top loading washers here in a few years due to their not meeting some standard they set for water consumption. IMO, they don't clean as well as top loaders, but I'm sure someone will feel differently. As for the water savings, you can't open the machine and add something after it's running. This is inconvenient should you discover after you started the machine, that you dropped a sock between your laundry hamper and the laundry room. What a waste having to run another load just to wash that one sock. And yes, water, even hot water, is not very expensive given the amount used for laundry. As for extended warranties, I never buy them and never will, but I only buy Maytag washers/dryers. BTW, you may wish to try negotiating the price on the appliances (I doubt you will get far doing this at Sears though). I got the dealer to drop 20% off my washer/dryer .

Got all Kenmore (Whirlpool) stuff myself. I've been very happy with it. My mother just bought a new washer and dryer from them about 3 months ago. There are deals to be had there, you just have to be willing to wait for them. For instance, they were offering some Saturday deal with 10% off appliance purchases. I gave her a couple 30 dollar off coupons that I found online, which they let her use one on each item. Then they had a rebate that refunded the delivery charge (which she got in a timely manner.) And to top it all off, the models she purchased were on sale in the first place. Look on places like fatwallet.com forums for specials and coupons.

If your buying a house with a garage, why are you thinking washers and dryers? You should be thinking Mill, lathe, welder.........

No problem with Sears, and I have a good Maytag Dealer close to me.
Welcome to home ownership.....Good Luck.

I've owned Kenmore products for over 30 years. IMO, you can't beat em for the price. Our new house is entirely Kenmore...not one complaint.
Front-loaders...All the stories you hear about washing machines lasting forever have been about top-loaders. This design has been refined through the years to the point that almost nothing ever happens to them. I wouldn't take a chance on a front-loader...but that's just me.
While you're at it, get another fridge for the garage. Look for the least expensive full-sized model...even a scratched or dented floor model. Great for 'garage drinks' and the extra capacity is handy for frozen stuff you find on sale. Your wife will like to put pies and cakes and casaroles in there as well. I've done this for years, and we're both glad I did. Usually Sears will give you a great deal on one that has a big scratch on the side, for instance.

Stu , if you look at the Kenmore than go look at the Wirlpool ( who currently makes Kenmore ) you may be supprised that the Kenmore may be the better appliance ! Sears generaly demands a little more from their venders no matter who makes the appliance . Could be any number of manufacturers , they bid the contract . At one time Kenmore was actually a Kelvinator or Maytag . The front loading washers ( although more costly to purchase ) are more efficient with water and soap , and will spin more water out of the cloths so the dryer doesn't have to run as long to dry them , saving you money over time . No I'm not an appliance salesman We did alot of looking when we replaced our washer/dryer . I used to deliver into some of the Gibson/ Kelvinator plants when they had the Sears contract and you could tell which units were going to Sears as they were being put together .

A nice thing about sears is that you can get parts easily, through an 800 number and they are delivered to your door in a few days.
They also have trucks and repairmen on the road and come to you if you need warranty work.
