I'm looking at buying a 2000 Mazda B4000 SE 4.0L 4x4 with 60k on it. It has the 3.73 rear with regular diff (no LS), and towing and offroad packages. It's almost loaded (no power convenience package).
I already own a 94 Explorer 4x4 Sport with a 4.0L and 5spd for a winter beater (will be sold if I get the B) and I really enjoy it except for the off-road portion isn't all that great with only having 3.27's and minimal ground clearance.
I really like the B (impressed with it's easy driving and nice torque) and I'm assuming that it will be more capable offroad than the Ex so, I guess my only question is, what are some common problems for the B?....if any
One huge problem, esp. in your case, could possibly be the 4x4 system. Some 2000 models still got the PVH (pulse-vacuum hublock) 4x4 system which was extremely junky and fails on almost every truck with it. I'd definitely check and make sure it has the newer constantly engaged 4x4 system before buying it.
The PVH system on my '98 is going strong at 130K. They don't all fail prematurely. Granted most of my 4WD stuff isn't exactly rock-climbing, just pulling small trailers, winter driving, etc.
And if they ever do fail, there is always the option of making them into a constant engagement-type system:
