I have an older simplicity with the 17 hp twin cylinder and a 42 inch cut murray. The best garden tractor I ever had was a late 60s wheel horse charger 12. I could not kill the thing. As for a farm tractor we got a ford 2120. I really like the old Farmall cubs and the ford 800s though.
Still have my Cub Cadet 127. Circa 1963. 12 hp Kohler hydro. It is for sale as I replaced it with a JD 325 this past winter. Really wanted the Ford/New Holland but the Deere deal was to good to pass up. The Cub is still an excellent tractor but I wanted a snowblower and the foot operated hydro.
I use John Deere tractors on my farm, but i do have some cub cadets. These are probably the most rugged garden tractors around. They are bulletproof. I have a 70, 104, and 126 Cub Cadet garden tractors with Kohler engines and a 154 Cub Lowboy. All of these tractors use a heavy duty 3 speed transmission, the same one used on Farmall Cub tractors beginning in about 1947. I also have a John Deere 318 with an Onan engine and a hydrostatic transmission. All these mowers have a shaft driven transmission. Cub Cadets are now built by MTD. I think they bought the Cub Cadet line of mowers from International Harvester in 1981, while IH was bankrupt. Since MTD has built Cub Cadets i think their quality has gone downhill, Although I still think they are a good product. If i was to buy a new Lawn mower it would be a John Deere.
Well I would have to say that I envy all of you guys who are fortunate to own a tractor. I'm trying to get into nursing school this Fall, and hope to have a good paying job in a few years. I continue to tell my wife that If I start making enough money to buy a tractor, that's what I want. My idea of a good lifestyle would be to work as a RN during the week, and till the earth on the weekends. I know that is certainly a contrast, but if the Lord is willing, I'll have me a tractor someday. I don't need a bass boat, or a brand new car, just a good tractor! That's one of my future goals. Thanks for your time. DARBY
FORD 9N Tractor with 60in. brush hog for doing the big stuff and a Gravely walk behind with a 50in. for the wife to do the lawn around house.
Put a riding sulky on the Gravely so the wife could ride, darn thing has thrown her off a couple of times. If it can't run in high gear and full throttle she won't drive it. (funny as hell to see her yelling and chasing that mower around the yard). I should put a kill switch on it (for when she falls off).
