I am thinking about a mustang T5 behind my rebuilt 292.
My questions are, does anyone know someone who has done it? And How do they like it?
This is just my opion, becuse Your Yblocks have some major major torque!!!...Your best bet is the FMX transmission, used on many 400 cleveland pickup engines, now that baby will be a good match for a Yblock. That 95 mustang, tranny would start gettong tired faster than you think....Janet
Hi, all... Janet I dont want to get into a debate but any trany will not last if abused. I had a FMX behind a stock (junk) 351W and it shelled with less than 70,000 miles. I have also experenced problems with the mustang trans, but I think it was from the 80's mustangs where the 1st/2nd gear pin falls out under high torque. Then T-45's have a linkage problem where the forks bend if abused (97+ mustangs). So it is just a mater of preference. If you like autos, you almost have to go with FMX (seperated bell housing), If you like 5-speeds go T-5, and If you like 4-speeds find one without the grany gear (like mine)
Dirty_Pile, If you are trying to find the goods and cons of the T-5 try some mustang forums with a search for T-5's. I did this and found the quirk with the T-45's

I agree if you abuse one, they will start little by little tearing up, it takes common sense on the owners part i guess you might say. I have disassembled several of the 60's C4 automatics for example, and to look at the thick material on the bands and the simplicicity of how it's built one shouls last forever, but yup, people do crazy things that can tear any good thing up. The strongest transmission i have ever known in my life, is cadillacs 77 to 70 400 hydramatic, thats off key for our Ford forum i know, but it's just for reference. But i', understanding your debate and do agree with you, debate is how we can figure out better ways or other ways to do things. No problem here, and i agree that i have seen transmissions that shou;d last forever, ruined by stupid people., but that's great that we can all put in our few cents on issues, because there are many ways something can be done, and then we have to consider what is it going to be used for?? To pull a horse trailer? Loaned out to someomes teen kid on a Friday night? You may remember my story about that chang over job on that 66 mustang from a 200 6 to a 302 and late c4, that guy would loan that car out to his teenage son, and that fluid had plate powder in it, i told the older man, your boys is burning some rubber, he said no way not my Bobby, i think that Father is naive, because a mechanic can read some things.....Janet
Just curious why a automatic transmission even got brought into this, the guy asked about a 5-spd for a 292. I build race engines and raced just about anything you could ever race. I really don't think even a hopped up 292 will hurt a T5 as bad as someone with a late model 5.0 Mustang would do to it. If you plan to use a T5 just get a world class 5 spd and you'll never have any trouble. Let's all just stick to the questions at hand, It makes it easier on everyones post.
You can find some additional info regarding a T5 behind y-blocks on the y-blocksforever.com site. There are also a few scattered y-block to T5 articles floating around on the web. Google search should bring up some infomration.
I know of a few people that have the T5 behind the yblock in cars -- not trucks.. Only the serious racer has broken a T5 with a blown 312. Everyone else seems to be happy. I Will be cruising my '57 tudor with a '93 Cobra T5 on my stock '57 292 in a few shorts weeks. The conversion is very simple. the toughest part is having to get the driveshaft resized.
Thanks for all the replies. I am going to do it. If anyone thinks of anything else please let me know.

I'll tell you a trick, that everyone seems to over complicate in here. On ford trucks from 54 all the way up to 1964, your answer for transmission and rear ends are your 67 to 72 series ford pickups. even a C4 or c6 or FMX or 3 on the tree, or floor manual shift on these things are not a big problem,,,,adapters folks!!!! Then cutting driveshafts and re welding them, and having them balanced at a driveshaft or truck PTO shop...I could show so many people how easy things can be to do, if they would only listen..I know because i constantly did these things from the 60's untill around 1999 when i started getting ill......Janet
