I have a XP computer and a Win 98 hooked together. I made a folder in each one that allows sharing. If I want to transfer some files, I put them in the shared folder and the other computer can copy them. I am hooked together via the router/switch.
1956: XP has a built-in file and settings transfer process, don't remember exactly how to get to it but it's there. Otherwise you can physically copy all the files over and then import them, it will retrieve messages, folders, and addresses, and IIRC your account settings like username, password, and servers, etc. Can also move your documents, pictures, music, and so on.
Wernerman: you can buy network adapters for laptops too. They are not the same as desktops (looks like you've noticed that already), a bit more expensive but should still be less than $20 now. It slides into the PCMCIA slot on the laptop, once in, the network sets up the same way as a desktop.
