I have a 98 Explorer 4.0 OHV with only 1000 miles
on it and would like to hear from anyone that can
tell me of problems that they have had to have
repaired that I should look out for. I've heard
of one owner that had to had the crankshaft pulley
come loose that required having the whole shaft
replaced. I have already had some simple problems that while annoying were not so bad. They include the rear window having something loose in the mechanism. The other rear door
squeking on rough roads. The rear window chaffing into the paint due to poor alignment.
I'm worried about a knocking noise that I hear
coming from under the front of the truck during warm up but it goes away. Almost sounds like it's coming from the front exhaust.
Anyone have any horror stories I should know about
please e mail me. Thanks,
Have a '98 SOHC engine explorer with almost 20K miles. Throttle sometimes sticks slightly coming off idle. Suspect when I take it in for the throttle cable recall that will probably fix the "stick". It has been a good unit so far.
If you ask me I will tell you that there are very good SUVs... We have two and are buying a new one soon they both have the OHV engine the only complante I have with the SUVs in the Manual tranny has a weak clutch...

I read a statement on a reply message sent from you on the Ford Truck Enthusiasts bulletin board and I wondered if you might help me make a decision on my Explorer.
I also have a 96 Explorer which has 105,000 miles on it. I am trying to decide whether to keep driving it or trade it for a new one. Most of my mileage is highway mileage consisting of 1-2 hour trips.
Lately, my "CHECK ENGINE" light has been coming on. I think it's just emission/02 sensor, etc. Have you ever had that problem?
I haven't really experienced any major problems with my Explorer, but I'm curious how long I can rely on it.
I noticed your reply said you had 184,000 miles on your 96, WOW! Did you get that kind of mileage out of your other 4?
I do keep up a fair maintenance schedule on mine.
Do you think I should be able to drive mine for another 50 or 60,000?
I also have a 98 Explorer with the new 4.0 SOHC engine(30,000 miles so far). I have had 2 problems so far.
1. Squeal in the right front hub when it is cold. There is a TSB which corrects this. They replace a plastic seal in the hub.
2. Knock in engine in cold weather, while enngine is warming up. There is also a tsb covering this one. It is a problem with the CAM chain tensioner. I have been told that it is only a noise concern and will not harm the engine. However, there is a new tensioner to fix it. The symptoms are: Engine quiet on cold startup, but will knock horribly part way between cold start and normal running temp. The noise will go away after you hit running temp
96 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 with 187,000 highway miles like you 1 -2 hour trips... I wouldnt trade my truck for anything in the world.... they'll have to pry the steering wheel from my cold dead hands....anyhow yes if you keep up a regular maintence schedule on it it should be fine...
the only problems I've ever had is
Wilderness A/T's suck!!
Water pump replaced at 60,000 extended warranty covered it
check engine light because of dirty o2 sensors... now I use Zmax and it never comes on unless i use less than 89 octane grade gas.
if something happened to my Explorer I would fix it because I couldn't bear to drive a <cringe and shudder> car....
I've had my 98 Explorer EB for about 4 years now. It has 137,000 and it still runs great. I'm very hard on my vehicle too, I don't change oil and tune it up like I should, forget to check the water, etc. I have had to change the radiator and I'm going to change the water pump this week. The check engine light has been on for awhile but I don't know if it's because of my water pump or not cause as you can probably tell I'm no mechanic. Before this water pump went out my engine has run quiet. After contemplating selling her and looking at a few other used vehicles, I decided to keep mine and made a vow never to neglect her again. I never knew how lucky I was till I saw what I could be driving.
