yeah, but he never mentioned what kinda car he had, i had mentioned mustang because i didnt figure he was speaking on an explorer of all things lol and it IS news to me that the 5.0 was still an option after 96... even in an explorer... why the hell would they keep it for the explorer, but put that crappy 4.6 in the stang?

My guess is they couldn't fit the 4.6 under the hood, with the sohc being too wide. Hell the 5.0 barely fits under there. In 02 they redesigned the explorer and it probably was given more room under the hood for the 4.6.

The reason the 5.0 was used for so long was the surplus of engines left from when they went to the 4.6 in the Mustang. With the surplus of 5.0's for GT's and Cobras, they built off that platform because it would fit. They were looking for stronger power - but manageable power - for the Explorer. The 5.0 would give them the torque they were lacking with the 4.0. They originally went with GT-40 heads and an intake setup almost identical to the Cobra. The cam was cut back and the exhaust manifolds were made restrictive to help control the horsepower, but keep the torque high. In late 97, they decided to go with the GT-40P heads because they are a better flowing head. In 2002 with the redesign, they could make the design to fit the 4.6.

Here is a pic comparing the two. It is obvious why the 5.0 was chosen and the 4.6 had to wait for a new design...

but its all becaust of the heads, right? no cam with pushrods and lifters, only OHC which would make the heads have to be beefed up more... correct? what about the DOHC 5.0? i could be wrong, but i thought they made one of trhose as well?

If there is one, it will be news to me. I know BMW had one, but not Ford.
