I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but never attempted to change spark plugs before. I have a 97 5.0 V8 and would like to know if there are any tips on changing plugs and wires. I noticed the spark plug locations are hard to reach and heard that entering through the wheel well works well. Any tips from someone who has done this procedure succesfully? Please advise.
Granted I have the 4.0 SOHC not the V8, but the only way to get at some of the plugs on that motor was to go through the wheel wells. With the right extensions and universal attachments, I don't think I'll do any of them from the top next time. It's a lot easier on the back sitting on a stool in the wheel well then hanging over the motor.
Last year for the 5.0 in Mustangs was 95. 96 they went with the 4.6
That was the first year they played with 5.0's in the Explorers - left over parts from Mustang GT's, etc. They did not come out with V8 Explorers until 96 models.
96-01 Explorers were 5.0's. Then they went to the 4.6 in them after that...
so then in reference to the author of this thread... the first thing you need to do is go back to where u got your plugs and buy the right ones for it lol
I hope he has changed them since this thread started (if they needed changing). The thread was from August of '04...
But on the track of the thread - the easiest way to change the plugs is through the fenderwells. Jack it up, remove the front tires, and look for a flap that is held in the fenderwell by pushpins. Remove those and the flap, and you are staring at the plugs and wires. Same for V6's, V8's, and Rangers...
