Just wondering if anybody knows the status on the recall for (I'm sure other years as well) 02 Explorer Lift hatch hinges; seems that I got a notice early Nov 04 with possible arrival at local dealers after Thanskgiving; Here it is going on mid Jan 05 and still no parts. Local dealer states waiting on FOMOCO for parts; any luck else where ?
I was at the dealer,in PA, yesterday getting the trans serviced in the '96 Exp and asked about the recall for my '02. I was told the parts are in limited supply and only comming in a few at a time to the dealer, they said I need to get on the waiting list and they will notify me when when the parts are in. I suggest you call the dealer see if they have a waiting list and if so get on the list. Dealer said there are two different kits for the repair, one for the glass with the little buttons that go through the window and the other for the glass with out the buttons. Let the dealer know which one you have.
I called my local dealer and final they have the parts in; told me for and 02 they will keep the vehicle for about seven hours to let parts dry; I thought the hinges bolted on I guess I need to check them more careful; I also have alittle bit of water leaking thru the bolts thru the glass ; they also order new gasket for that area as well; I also read in pass threads of people having problems with the plastic section between lift glass and hatch lift cracking/ splitting. Hope this doesn't apply to my SUV.
Thanks for your reply.

I'm an engineer and suprised that they are replacing the hinges. The problem is really with the latch mechanism.
I've noticed that when I park on a hot day with the rear window facing the sun, the smoke glass expands from the heat making it very difficult to close. The hinges sag with age, but the latch mechanism fails to allow for expansion of the glass and door frame.
Also, the only way to adjust the latch/catch alignment is by deforming the door where the latch is mounted.
