Hi,
I have a '92 explorer 4-door 4wd that has always had the shakes above 55mph. The vibration is not always consistent. Sometimes it is worse than others. It is not the tires and wheels, not the drive shaft. All suspension parts on the front are good and tight. Radius arm bushings are new. I have heard and read a lot that suggests many of the early explorers had this problem. Does anyone know what the fix is??
thanx
I took the wheels off my 86 jeep cherokee and put them on my explorer no more shaking. Yes they bolt right up. My explorer has firestones. My jeep has BF goodrich. Firestone tires suck. Waste your money on some good tires I did.
Be sure to check out all suspension components for wear, tightness, etc. Unfortunately, you will probably not be able to get completely rid of the shake. It seems that the 91-94 Explorers have a problem in that the "harmonics" of the engine, trans, suspension, etc. all come together to produce a slight shaking that shows up in the 55-65 mph range. This is just something that is due to the design of the vehicle. Polyurethane bushings & a steering stabilizer may help somewhat, but it's almost impossible to entirely eliminate.

I have a 94' Explorer with the same 'shaking' problem. I have been bustin my butt trying to find a solution. It seems Ford has been dragging their heels in solving the problem. I imagine Ford is trying to fix the problem using Ford parts. Has anyone had any luck with aftermarket suspension parts and/or different size tires in solving this problem?
I had this same problem you described, but in my '93 Bronco 302. I spent mucho $$ on a)rebuiling rear driveshaft, b)new shocks, c)new front u-joints, radius arm bushings, etc., d)new wheel bearings, etc.... only to have fixed the problem the other day for $18... I needed a new distributor cap and rotor. Apparently, even though the truck ran and accelerated fine, the cap was so nasty inside that the constant speeds caused the vibration. I don't know much about Explorers but they're both Fords with similar drivetrains; look under your cap and see how bad it is-hope this helps and good luck!
The 4.0's in Explorers don't have distributers. Instead they use electronic modules. No moving parts to break/replace. But when they go it's usually abrupt!!
I went too my consumer affairs department here in Virginia, and Ford finally agreed to install a kit they knew would get most of the vibration out, the vibration is coused by, believe it or not engine mounts, muffler so big it starts to vibrate the truck over 55 mph, and they had to install a lateral shock to the rear end , there is a TSB on this from Ford. But you have to push on it. Ford has known about this problem. It covers 91 to 94 explorers. But after they repair it it drives like a tank and still vibrates some, but not as much. TSB article is # 96-4-17 Hope this helkps you guys. I am in the process of finding a lawyer so I can recoup my losses of thousands of dollers, buying numerous sets of tires, rotors, brake jobs, frt end alignments...etc. What a rip off!!!! Hope this helped
Rainey. I had a vibration also on my 93 sport model. "I" had to find the problem and saved myself a lot of money. Bent axels. Both of them.Put new ones in myself and fixed the vibration problem. Ford denies there was a problem. Tried to blame the firestone tires. Firestone worked with me on different tires and I did buy and still own rims which were not the problem. I replaced both axels in two hours. a very easy job on the ground in the dirt.
i have a 92 ford explorer it shakes realy bad in the back when at 25 to 30 miles it seems to get worse at 35 feel like the hole thing seems to vibrate but i do have bad rear seals
