Hi all. Been lurking for a few weeks, thought I would join in on the fun. I purchased my first diesel about 2 months ago , and absolutely love this truck. I have a few minor glitches that seem to be typical eccentricities with our trucks. (1) Romping idle on cold start. (2) Clunking tranny ,Going from reverse to drive. (3) A slight odor of diesel exhaust blowing thru the ac vents at idle . The truck is a 2004 with an engine build date of 9-22-03. I'm taking the truck in for my free oil change in a couple of weeks and to address these problems.Should I ask for a re-flash ( I,m planning on installing a programmer ).Is the clunking trans fixable, or should I live with it ? Probably, the problem that galls me the most , is the fumes from the ac vents. It seems that most dealers are reluctant to fix this problem. Any advise would be appreciated . Dan
Congatulations on the truck!! And Welcome to FTE!!
You'll find plenty of reading 'and' answers if you do a 'search' about all the topics/questions that you've listed.. And many that you havent!!
Let me address the 'clunk' first, because with 'my' rig, it is the worse (now) of the problems.. With mine, it will 'either' clunk when going from reverse to drive on accelleration, or even on a straight pull from a dead stop.. When 'new', I only noticed it when going from R to D.. It clunks/jerks after about 2-3 miles an hour.. I also have it between the 2-3 upshift, but both conditions are totally 'gone' when the trans is warmed up all the way.. But can re appear after a 'short' cool down period.. Sound about right? If so, Ford has a service message that has deemed this a 'Normal' condition for the Torqueshift trans.. A forward clutch/spline 'caused' bump, and no service/repair attempts are to be made.. I've driven four 05's, (thinking of trading up) and 'none' of them have had any 'clunks'.. Smooth and clean/crisp shifts.. Better than mine, even when new.. (8600 miles now)...Normal.... If so, we'd all have it.. Sounds like a 'cover' from Ford..
The A/C 'aroma' is a harder question, as many have complained, but my opinion is that it's 'somewhat' of a normal condition when the air intake/vents for the A/C seem to 'pick up' smell, or at least in mine, when I come to a stop and some of the exhaust enters the system as it passes by the air intake 'or' open window.. I think there's not much you can do unless yours is extreme.. You'll read more about that too. I keep my A/C on recirculate to help in keeping outside air from being pulled into the cabin.. Seems to help..
And lastly, is the running/idle/driveability issue.. Mine has had the flashes on up to current 12/03.. It runs awesome!! But some feel if it runs good, (or enough) don't mess.. But if the idle and romp are a concern, I'd go for the flash if thats the only problem.. You can go to the site below for a list of the flash/program dates as well as the concerns/fixes they've addressed... There are other conditions that cause a rough idle/romping throttle.. Oil fill/dillution ect. A trip to the dealer may be a good idea to see if a fix can be had without a flash should you not want to go that way unless necessary, but you can bet that the tech will want to bring your programming up to date.. There is another flash due out soon (or overdue) to address the low MPG's and ? according to Ford, 'and' good rumor!!.. You should also mention, and have them check your transmission and exhaust odor concerns.. DOCUMENT them for sure if no repairs are made.. Good Luck and keep us posted!!! The 'fixes' info. is important for all to read...
my truck had the same problem with diesel exhaust smell when my truck was stopped. Turned out to be the drivers side pipe to the y pipe. Its a common problem but you might want to do some searching to find if thier is an exhaust leak.

Can you provide your VIN? We can help alot more if we can retrieve a specific list of problems, dealer visits, and codes.

I have finally purchased my dream truck of ten+ years; a 2004 F-250 CC 6.0 PSD (Vin# 1FTNW2154EC68725; Built date 03/04) with 12K miles, no noticable problems or any complaints till now. I have recently noticed the same issues as 'dieseldutt'
Couple quick questions/concerns.
(1) I have recently been noticing a significant clunk between forward and reverse, also from a stop light starts.
(2) The 'chattering' under lite loads between 45-55 mph.
(3) Diesel ordors in cab occasionally.
(4) Under heavy throttle full turbo, truck feels like it shutters or 'Kinda' like a slip-stick feeling.
(5) Today at a traffic lite, truck was acting as if it was missing on a cylinder "choppy idle" but is fine now.
(6) How can I find out if my truck needs to be flashed and what is the latest version?
Please advise if all or any of these things require servicing.....
zr_scott Welcome to FTE : IMO all of these issues need to get to the dealer to get documentaion and repair process started.
dieseldutt Welcome to to FTE: Typical diesel smell in cab is due to crack in "Y" pipe. Somehow some dealers miss this. Would get it in to the dealer before winter sets in to have it looked at. FYI: Apologies in advance if I accidently mess up the spelling of your sign on name in the future.
dieseldutt, Thanks for the info, have you had any fixes recommended for the tranny clunk and 45-55 chattering. A buddy of mine thinks it could be the lock-out in the convertor causing the chatter, he had it in a mid 90's F-150, but the convertors should be completely different, so I would think.....
