4wd System Crash Course

I have a '94 Explorer Sport. Can someone give me a description of the transfer case / front axle / auto-locking hub interactions that occur when I put it into 4wd? This is my first experience with auto-lockers, and I'm pretty fuzzy on how everything engages. I had the whole hub assembly apart the other day repacking the front bearings, and I couldn't figure out how the hubs work.

4wd System Crash Course

Well , its all a relatively simple operation . To begin with when you engage the transfer case , this will turn the front driveshaft & front differential , the hubs engage at this point simply because they have been set in motion . When you repacked the hubs , you probably noticed a spring in there . This spring keeps the hubs engaged until you disengage the transfer case and backup a few feet . Manual hubs work the same except the driver needs to turn the **** on the hubs to lock them to the front axles . I personall y like the manual operation better simply because if you ever find yourself in a position to need the 4wd , you may not always have the room to move enough for the hubs to lock . Remember that the front wheels have to actually move a little to lock the hubs with the auto lockers . I hope this answers your question ?
