Hi I have started to save up and going to buy a 1975-77 f-100. i want it to really go but run on pump gas. I was just wondering if any one could help me buy listing some parts or performance pakages that could help boost my power. Can you also list some nice sounding mufflers that sound great with a 460? thanks.
Fordever, I muight need some tip too, my cuz called me yesterday and told me this guy would give me a 460 minus heads and intake? he just going a short bock, if I took it out of the car....Early Lincoln? 71or72...So what the Hay..Now I have a 460..for what I dont know??? Thank God I dont have to put the new short block in...what a friggin pain.... the motor has 78k on it..guy said it ran fine..just wants a new motor?
hey russ it is mostly likely the heads on that bad boy wre the DOVE which are really good and about the most desired for the 429/460. i look for some parts and numbers in a little bit.
alright here are a few components!
750cfm carb
headers your choice
scorpion roller rockers #1024 (they are stud mounts and $220)
Intakes the edel rpm #7166 non egr, weiand has a stealth series intake #8012 which is idle to 6800 and is dual plane. I'd go with the rpm most likely. I don't like the performer intake as a performance piece. Nor do i like the their perf or rpm packages. The performer cam is weak for mid performance while the rpm is to much.
As for cams comp has a dual energy 34-330-4 which might work good. And crane has not much to offer sadly, but 353901 would be a nice cam.
Now if you really want power there are some serious 429/460 heads out there. trick flow, ford, edel all have them but you are looking at $2000+ but there is a lot of power to be gained with these. I will run some simulations and cams and report back on that.
i ran some tests on dyno2003 with cams. I found that the crane 353901 and the 34-226-4 comp are very similar in terms of output. The 34-235-4 performed the best and the 34-330-4 is not as good until 4000+ rpm. so i would rule that one out! The are other cam manufactur out there but the cams are not as good imo. Some offer really high adv duration which just moves the power band up to far and they are mostly single pattern and Fords for the most parts the help on the exhaust side. As Russ should already know i am not a fan of melling or clevite cams either. They produce little bottom end power even for being a rv cam.
cam specs
353901
.487/.518 lift
260/272 adv duration
107/117 cl
204/216 dur at .050
112 ls
34-235-4
111 ls
.505/.515 lift
262/270 adv dur
107/115 cl
44 overlap
218/226 dur at .050
Like i said the 353901 and the 34-226-4 are equal and the 34-235-4 is a tad better in hp and tq.
The build used a 429
9.5 cr
429 head flow
rpm intake
750 carb
large tube headers with mufflers
the builds all produce about 331-332hp at 4000 and 459-471tq from 2000-3500
although i don't recommend it but the kaase scj heads showed a 102 peak hp gain and a 43ftlb peak gain. If you had a race car maybe these would be ok but not for the truck.
And btw the 460 with this build makes 325hp and 504ftlbs of power!

You break out the checkbook and add the john kaase super cobra jet heads you will see about 434hp at 5000 and 538fts at 3500 with 500+ from 2000 to 4500. Now its possible for more hp but it will come from higher rpm and be a waste in a sense. This build up makes so much power you would want to pay for the trannys and other parts it would break. At this point the cam is kinda small but it helps build the awesome torque.
Well Fordever, Thanks for some Number's, I havent even thought about what I'am going to do with the motor? I guess at a later date I was to put it in the truck? I would either have to raun a different tranny, or use a trans dapt..and change the motor mounts from FE to 385 series?? Oh well I have more time right now than money... Just some food for thought.. the price was right on the 460 tho...
Fordever, Ya might wanna runs this and see what ya get?? On that 460..BTW..the Number on it are Block-C9VE and heads are DOVE-A???
I havent had a chance too check? but thats what I have for 2 hrs. work? LOL..
Anyway...
I'am thinking for a future date?
4.392 bore
Stock stroke (cant remember) like 3.850 or something? dont have specs here!
Ed Heads, done by KC.. Stage IIs, 2.250 int. and 1.780 Est.. 75cc heads all ported
Edel Victor Single plane
Holley 850 CFM
Crane #359341 roller cam- @ .004 - Int. open-28 CL-70...Est-open-76- CL-30 degrees... Timming set +4 degrees..
Roller lifters and rocker's
10.50 to 1 CR..
Large tube header's
I think thats it? on the Valve size..I think Intake Dia..is right .....Im not to sure about Exhs??
See if you come up with about the same #s as I did??
LOL!! the wife just told me if I build that?? I should put it in an old Falcon!! LMAO..I told her too sell some of her Diamonds so I could finish the 433 Cobra!!!
Well I really dont know? Or I wouldnt have asked.. I think its capable with the parts as I mentioned.. 600+ HP and over 650LBS of torque even on a single plane intake?
I was told by a few guys that this motor was a good one for a build? and wanted to know if I could get anouther?? I dont know CRAP about the 385 series..Im just learning how to build a good FE... LOL..but I do have some ..HE,He time building brand X motors....
Well I got the heads pulled on my latest 466 its a 78 block with the e-A2A large chambered heads on it, I know I was bummed too...but then I looked at the pistons and it has dome top pistons in it...So I called the guy I traded my 462 Lincoln motor for this 466, and found out indeed they are TRW High dome pistons in it to make up for the large chamber heads and he says it had less than 10K on the motor, and it does look clean,it also has a Isky 300* .535 lift hydraulic flat tappet cam in it?
I havent checked out the cam yet to see if it was broke in right? But as of right now it looks to be a good runner, I'll have to put some roller rocker on it, but that will be after either Hi-Po heads, or see what the "Mad Porter" charges to do these? And run an RPM air gap intake, and put in a 4.300" crank and see if it will run? LOL!!
Latest Motor to play with...and yes I still have the 433 Cobra too...
hey. i have a quick question. im building a ford 429. i am getting trick flow a460 heads with a matching intake but dont know what to do for the rest. what kind of cam and crank should i get for it
