I got a 1975 ford f250 from my great uncle, it ran before it sat for 8 years, now the 460 is locked up tight, got the automatic transmission in it. Other than that, i don't know much about it. Any help/suggestions would be great, thanks!
Some pics of the truck are on this forum (can't figure out how to post):
Maybe, just maybe, if you told us what you have already done we could be more helpful.
It is difficult to offer sound suggestions when we have to play 20 questions at the same time.
Did it sit open, i.e. no hood, carb off, exposed to the elements.......or was it simply parked while still running and left to sit? How bad do the plugs look, all rusty, or okay? If there is any oil in the engine or coolant in the radiator, have oil and water mixed?
check the freeze plugs on the block, if you live in a cold climate have you had a hard freeze and cracked the engine block.......as others have said, more info is better! its easier if you provide more info, than if we have to keep asking.
It was running, then it was parked and sat. When I pulled the plugs, they looked almost out of the box, the carb is still on it, so is the hood, the air filter does not appear to be wet or damp, and all of the hoses seem to be good. I think it just froze up from sitting too long, and now I can't get it loose.
Okay, thats good! check coolant,if present is there oil in it? same for crankcase, any water in the oil........check the freeze plugs, where do you live? if you live in North Dakota or Minnesota, and it was outside for eight winters, you may have a cracked engine block.
We parked it because we were planning on turning it into a plow truck, but we never got around to it, it ran perfectly fine when parked it, my dad used to drive it around town, we just got another truck and didn't have any use for it anymore.
how much of the trucks history do you know? how long before it was parked had the 460 replaced the original motor? because a lot of times when a vehicle sits like this after an engine swap, its because the swap itself may have created problems.........i looked at the link you posted at the beginning, Rockcrawler forum where you ask about transplanting a 390, this will require changing motor mounts.
You ask for suggestions on two different forums, but it seems like we have to keep asking you more and more questions regarding what youve done, and what you want to do, when its far easier if you give as much info as possible to begin with, rather than force us to ask
