Duraspark "Blue vs Red" question

Hello....not sure if this was the correct forum, but here goes. I have a 1984 Ranger that I put a 302 in about 20 years ago. Sat in the garage for the past 10 years and im just now finding the time to get it back on the road.
Electronic ignition with the Blue grommeted ignition module. This set-up worked, but I replaced it with a MSD 6a and ran it that way for years. Now, it seems the MSD isnt working, so i wired it back to the original module and fired it up. Seems to run ok. So theres a little history and heres my question.
How important is it to have a resister wire running to the coil as it shows in diagrams? I am not sure if i have it that way. And I read a post somewhere that said if you use the Red grommetted module you dont need to worry about? my concern is that if I keep using the Blue grommet module, and dont have a resister wire, I may damage something? Can the Red be swapped with the Blue without any concerns? I realize I could just replace the MSD, but didnt want to spend the loot just yet.

You can pick up a 1.4 ohm ceramic ballast resistor for about $5. Yes you need it with the blue grommet module. The red does not according to post#9 in link below. Just wire in the resistor. The coil will overheat and shorten it's life considerably with out it.

Thanks GFW1985.....as it turns out, i am thinking the wire I used (from stock ranger wires) was in fact a resister wire. I am looking for my schematics to verify. If i am seeing things right, I can easily wire it in anyway. Or just get the red grommet module. Thanks alot for the info !

Check the wire you have for it's resiatance and if it's in spec, use it.
