The daughter said her brakes are making noise so its up on the jack stands and front roters are shot. The calipers look like they're secured by some sort of split fastener. How is this removed? It has a sensor on the brake assembly so it must have ABS, any tips to follow to avoide screwing up it's function? I'm not much of a mechanic but "have craftmans will try". Thanks for any assistance.
I assume your Explorer has auto locking hubs ? Removing the rotors requires requires a large socket ...2 3/8 If I recall ? The snap ring you mentioned reqires a snap ring tool to remove . I dont want to discourage you , but a repair manual with an exploded view & details on removal & installation would be helpful if you havent done this before . Even if you invest in a repair manual , the socket , and snap ring pliers , you ll still be ahead money wise if you have someone else do the repair . Just make sure you secure the hub assembly correctly on reinstallation . Also a torque wrench would be handy for the proper tightening of the wheel bearings .
If you click on the Tech Article section , you will have access to a great step by step instruction with photos included by Mark Strickland . He used aftermarket rotors & brake pads but the removal & installation will be the same for a stock vehicle .
