LAST EDITED ON 23-Dec-00 AT 08:36 AM (EST)[p]I have a 98 explorer four door.
My right rear door inside handle is in like neutral position.
The door will open from the outside.
They say to look for the two nylon clips on inside door.
I do not see any nylon clips.
But there is a child proof lever.
I can flip this lever up or down, nothing happens.
Please advise.
Thanks
I had a similar thing happen to my 4 door '95 Explorer. A plastic "cam" piece on the inside door handle assembly broke off making it impossible to open the door from the inside. Repair is easy. Simply remove the rear door panel (two screws above handle and pop-off panel fasteners). As I remember two screws hold the plastic handle in and a rod attaches to the back of the handle. Replace with new handle. It cost $10 at my local Ford dealer. Total job was about 15 minutes in a parking lot. Let me know if you have any any questions.
Thanks Mason
Should I ask for a plastic cam,or is there a part No.
thanks again

You must buy the whole handle assembly but it's only $10 retail. The small cam is part of the plastic handle assembly and is not replaceable. The broken cam piece wouldn't allow the rod to move enough to open the door. I don't have the part number. I just removed mine and took it to the dealer. I don't think it's an unusual problem. Mine broke because my nine-year-old son was too impatient to unlock the door and just kept pulling on the handle until it broke. Probably a lot of impatient kids out there. Good luck.
It was nice of Ford motor Co. to install a plastic ( nylon as the tech would say ) part in cridicle spot.
$10.00 is better then $150.00 to replace the door handle.
I have a 96 expl....same problems with BOTH rear doors....I replaced both handles inside rear doors...problem was fixed...and guess what.....not long after, they are broken again....don't tell me I have to buy more handles. What a rip off. Is there any way to replace nylon gear with a metal one that I get made? Something's gotta give here.
I too had this problem, and am headin' back to the parts store to get yet another handle
When beginning installation, it is easiest to remove the door panel from the bottom to the top, as a FTE advised me. Works like a charm.
Now if we can only get a more reliable door handle!!
I am going to tackle the doors this weekend. Then I'm going to try and get Ford to pay for replacing my Rear high mount Break light that is only a couple thousand out of warrantee.
