I bought my 99 expy eb 2 weeks ago. Its been perfect with no problems. Randomly and I can't pinpoint what it is but I hear a rumble like I am going over a chater strip. Sometimes I don't hear it for a day or two and sometimes I hear it a few times a day. The souund only last for a second and you would swear you were going over a chatter strip but the road is smooth.
Today I was going down hill and I had to brake a bit harder that I usually do and I heard and felt a loud bang coming from the rear of the vehicle. It felt weird like the rear end fell out. But nothing happened, the truck drove fine. About a thousand feet later I went to stop and hear a snapping sound again from the rear like the brakes were just stuck. AFter that I was nervous and drove home. The trip was 65 miles home and the truck ran without an issue. I looked under the vehicle and it looks perfect to me.
Do you need any more information from me?
I have made several trips since I've been home and did hard starts and stops and it seems normal.
I would take a look at the universal joints on the rear drive shaft the rear brake pads to start Also if you have rear storage pockets check to make sure there are no golf ***** in there. I had one in mine and it took me a month of saying what was that before I found it..
If it is ocuring under 35 mph then I would not only check the universal for play but make sure they are not frozen this is common in the greaseless ones and will cause a shuttering type feeling worse at slow speeds.
I didn't check the shocks, I have the air bad system, do I still have shocks - it looks like I see shocks under there when I look. would it have both???
I'm having the same rumbling problem with my 01 Eb. In my case it definitely happens only when it's changing gears, most often when it goes into overdrive. it doesn't seem to matter how much load it's under either. i had 5 passengers and was towing my 3500 pound boat and i only heard it once on a 200 mile trip.....but this morning on the way to work i must have heard/felt it 4-5 times. I just bought this truck last friday so i really don't know too much about it yet. is the torque converter lockup controlled electronicly? how does the A4WD system work, does it use a center differential or is this one of those crappy part time engage only when it feels like it systems?
several people on expedition forum.com had the same problem. their advise was to get to a shap as soon as you can and get a complete flush filter and fill of the transmission. should take about 18 - 19 quarts and use only MERCON and NOT MERCON V fluid. Also, the torque converter and cooling lines should also be flushed to get out all old fluid.
This transmission seems to be sensitive to old fluid and will cause that rumble strip feeling once in a while. I'm taking mine in tomorrow for this treatment. And while there I am having the fluid changed in the rear end and the transfer case too and the Universal joints inslected as well.
I'm posting here because I read this thead several days ago and just moved on. Yesterday I noticed this very thing happening in my '01 EB, shifting from 3rd into 4th (or OD) so I came back here to find the thread again.
Is this problem really so serious as to warrant immediate attention in the form of fluid and filter change? Is there an immediate liklihood of disaster? Has anyone blown a tranny after ignoring this quick rumble-type sound/feeling during shifting?
