I know this topic has been beat to death, but I've did a search through the posts and collected all the indicators that I think will help. I just need to know if there all accurate, and if there are any that I've missed.
On my way to the track friday night, I pulled over for gas and a guy came over and started talking to me about the truck. Apparently, he has a F-100 with a 428CJ!! He said he's asking $2000 for the whole truck. Before I make a decision, I want to make certain that it is a 428.
-Head Casting #'s - C8OE-H or N/C8AE-J OR F/C8WE-A
(assuming it's a 68)
-16 exhaust bolts on CJ heads
-"C" welded on back of block for CJ or "A" for 428.
-Remove center frost plug, "428" stamp on cylinder wall.
(not sure which side)
I know the only certain way would be to check the stroke or clearance but I don't think I could get an accurate measurement without tearing the motor apart.
Isn't the 428 externally balanced also? So would there be a large weight on the flywheel (even though some non-428 fw's also have weights). Or how about in the front with the harmonic balancer?
Any info would be appreciated.

It's a 428. The 428 on the cylinder wall gives it away. The heads could also be 390 heads, but they're probably 428 CJ heads if they're on a 428 block.
"Some blocks have a "428" cast onto the floor inside the water jacket. There are two common positions to view this protruding number: one is just inside the center freeze plug hole, the other is directly beneath the long coolant slot at the rear of the block."
Do the stroke test procedure using the #1 and #4 plug holes, you'll be close enough to tell if it's the right stroke.
There's no way of knowing if it's the right bore even with the 428 in the water jackets. I've seen a couple 390's with the 428 cast in. Real confusing!
Only 428SCJ's got the hatchet on the crank spacer.
Not that it helps much but CJ's got the Carter "X" fuel pump. Also, you can see the sandwich of gaskets if it has the windage tray installed.
Stock intake is a C8OE-C
If the stroke and #'s match, I'd go for it anyway. Worst case would be a 410 with CJ parts.
