distributorless ignition issue

I'm in the process of building a 428 incorporating tec3 fuel injection and distributorless ignition. I'm sure people have done this before as there's a picture in the fe garage of a 428 with tec3 in a cobra. With a crank trigger and 1 coil per every 2 cylinders the only purpose the dizzy will serve is to drive the oil pump. I'd like to chop the top off the dizzy and mount the coils where the dizzy was, but I'm not sure what issues I'm going to have making this "stub shaft". What dimensions are critical with the lower part of a distributor and oil pump drive on an fe? Should I try to make this out of a stock dizzy housing utilizing bushings or would sealed or open ball bearings or even needle bearings or tapered bearings and a purpose-built housing machined from solid aluminum be my best bet. I don't mean to be over thinking this, but I have plans to put alot of miles on this engine and a failed oil pump drive would make me unhappy. Thanks

Dustin

The only real important issue is the location of the gear to the bottom of the shaft. The shaft needs to extend low enough to engage the oil pump, but the gear must clear the block by .030 or so. Use regular ball bearings. They will accept any side load that the shaft gets from the cam gear.

You may be able to modify a regular dizzy to make this work, or if you are handy with a lathe make yourself a housing. Kinda hard to describe on here, but it could be done.

Took a look at some aftermarket hardcore racing distributors and seams like a sealed ball bearing on top and long bushing on the bottom holds up well. Dry sump oiling would be very cool, but offers no real advantage over wet sump for street driving. It would just add significant cost and complexity.
