does anybody know if there is a difference in the pulleys between 351m/400 with or with out air?any advice would be greatly apprecated. particulary the power steering pulley and or bracket. also the water pump pulley. thanks

Reason: wrong word
I've never seen any without air, but since the air is driven by a longer power steering belt with an idler for tightening, it's logical to assume you just use a shorter belt on the same pulleys.
that is what i thought also. i removed a 351m out of a f150. put it in a bronco. the f150 did not have air and the bronco does. the power steering belt is not lined up well and will throw the belt off.this never happened before the swap.i have replaced the belt many times.i have another bronco and the pulleys are in line on it.but i don't know what the differnce are.i have switched power steering brackets with thge same outcome.i am not currently running the air compressor on the either bronco.i goofed somewhere but i can't figure out where. thanks for the info
I've got a 400 in my '77 F-150. I imported a '78 F-150 a/c system into my truck many years ago. I have a 3 groove pulley on my crank. Before A/C I had a 2 groove pulley. The most forward v-belt groove lines up with the tensioner and the A/C pulley, that is the only thing run by that belt. Hope this helps.
On my 78 f150 with factory air: A/C is on its own belt. WP & ALT are one belt. PS is one belt. On my factory air, the PS pump is mounted to the head with the A/C mount in between. So I am concluding that WP & ALT are unaffected by A/C option (like scroob have never worked with non-AC) and am guessing it was cheaper to have different crank pulleys for AC than different PS brackets so.... Suggest adding about 3/8" of washers to PS bracket or install the factory AC mount and things should line back up. GL
lets see my 78 just power steering and alt has a 2 grove lower pulley i think???
my 79 has/had a/c and smog pump(in the back still) p/s alt and a 4 groove pulley
but both 351m as far as i know 79 for sure 78 real likely
oh ya the p/s hasn't got the original spacer so there is couple inches of washers

fonz, the A/C bracket had a eyelet that went behind the ps pump bracket and acted as a spacer. Like Ecuri suggested, you need to add washers behind the ps bracket until it's lined up.
i have the orignal spacer that was on the non-air engine.i swapped the spacer and the power steering bracket.it still didn't help.i am lost thanks for the advice guys.
i am using the power steering pump/ pulley that was on the bronco.which is not orginal to that motor.i have swapped the power steering brackets with no help.and the water pump pulley is orginal to the engine.my biggest problem i think is the fact that this has been a ongoing project i have forgot something along the way.thats why i was wandering if the pulleys were the same between the air and none air engines.the power steering pulley is to far forward( toward the radiator).if i get to high in th r's it will throw the belt instantly.i have even put washer between the pump itself and the bracket trying to shim it back toward the rear of the truck.i am as far as i can go with out hitting the head.
well this is ford(i love them but) aint nothing the same
thats why i was figuring run all 4 or 5 pulleys/brackets off 1 original motor and i would think it will come togther i would think
trust me i would love to get rid of that 4 grove bottom pulley
moroso has a 2 groove 4" crank pulley. although its a much cleaner look and almost 2lbs lighter its a big difference from the stock one dramatically slowing down your water pump and accessories.
on mine I have already made a smaller altenator pulley to compensate. power steering is ok but I would really like to get a smaller dia wp pulley. I don't have any aluminum stock that big.
