Quick question, my 65 ford with a 352, seems to "pop and crack" when I let off the gas. At idle it is fine and while accelerating it is fine. Is this just a timing problem? My dad had thought it was a carb problem but it's just had a fresh rebuild. Anybody know how to trouble shoot to find out what the deal is? Thanks,
Chuck C.
It is normal for a truck with Glass pacs on it to backfire pop in this manner. it could also happen if there is no or a minimum amount of backpressure. You need to figure out where it is poping from either the exgaust or the intake manifold
Backfiring on deceleration is usually caused by a rich air-fuel ratio. A low fuel level causes a lean air-fuel ratio.
2) When the float is saturated with gasoline, the air-fuel ratio is rich, and this may cause backfiring on deceleration.
3) Late exhaust valve closing or early intake valve opening can also attribute to popping in the exhuast.
4) Backfires throught the carb indicate an ignition timing issue most of the time. The cyclinders may be firing while the intake valves areopening or closing rather then when it is closed.
Let me start by saying thank you for all the feedback I've gotten. I went with the timing idea and put in new plugs, wires, rotor, points, and condensor. That seemed to fix the backfiring while decelerating. For some reason now though the truck feels slower and if I give it too much gas it pops back through the carb. I've checked all my plug gaps and the timing and all that but I really just think my carb is hosed. I have been wanting a four barrel though...
