I have found rust that someone has covered with a less than artistic touch. The rust appears on the Doors at the very bottom. Anywhere from 1 inch to 3 inches up from the botom of all 3 doors. Each area is no bigger than a U.S.Quarter in size.
Is there some type of plastic/rubber body molding I could get the could cover these small areas? Of course, i would hand sand away the area, first and then spary it with some type of sealer/rustproofing.
I can't spend much...thus a full paint job is out. Otherwise the truck looks real nice!
Color of truck is listed above.
Thanks for any thoughts you might have. I read this forum several times daily.
Unfortunately, just covering the rust with body molding is not going to 'fix' anything. You mention it's a two-tone Lariat paint scheme, so why not just repair the rust correctly and simply repaint the lower (beige) parts of the panels all the way around? Nowhere near the costs of a complete. You could easily do it yourself with rented equipment. Best of luck.
I just had my doors fixed on my 99'. The body shop I took it to sandblasted it down then overlayed the seam with the glue that they use to put body panels on. Shop forman said that it has great rust killing abilities as well as totally seals up to seam from moisture. cost me about a $150. Mine started rusting in about 6 months after I bought it (new). Ford gave me a new door, which I still have in the box if anybody wants to buy it.
This also occurs on the tailgate. In order to properly fix, the door and t/g have to be unhemmed, cleaned, apply new adhesive, rehem, and paint. There is a TSB 04-10-11 for the repair proceedure. I took my 00 w/ 85k miles in to see if it would be covered but the service dept said there was a cut off at 70k miles.

I have a 00 Lariat with 44,000 miles that I'm buying from my Dad (original owner). It will be five years old in August and it has the rust problem on the door and tailgate seams, otherwise it looks new (except for the cracks in the roof ditch material). Currently, there is no visible rust on the seams, but the paint is badly blistered from moisture underneath and the paint could be flaked off by scratching it with a fingernail.
I've seen a TSB (on ALLDATADIY) number 01-9-8 describing the repair procedure. This TSB says the problem would be covered by the 3 year - 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. The 100,000 mile corrosion warranty wouldn't apply since there is no rust through.
Did Ford revise their warranty policy covering the rusty seams issue? Are they flexible when it comes to the age and mileage? Where did lardman's dealer come up with the 70k mile figure?
I took my truck in to the dealer and showed them the tsb. The service advisor said I had too many miles on it (I had 84k at the time). He said they would only cover it up to 70k miles. He gave me some paper to fill out to dispute the miles and have a rep look at it. His words were, "I guarantee they will deny your dispute, but it can't hurt to try." I didn't bother filling out the paper work, I did trade the truck to the same dealer for an 04 and got a heck of a trade-in!
As you said Trek, the rust has to be "through" the metal...an actual hole through the metal in order for it to be coverd by the 100K. Not sure where the advisor came up with 70k, but all dealerships are different. Take it in and see what they say.
fix it the right way cause you can buy some sore of molding to cover up the rust but its' still there......then when the entire bottom of the door is rusted up you have to replace it anyway......you have to be able to find some local guy that could do it for you.....you could even do some of the work for him.....sand it down to the metal and clean all the rust off first....saves some man hours at the paint shop whitch can be costly....hope this helps
