I have a 84 Bronco with a 302 - C6 combo & 100,000 miles on it.
On the way home today a lifter in the left bank started ticking like a time bomb. I checked oil level & oil pressure, & everthing was fine, so I drove it home ticking about 20 miles, it still had good power & ran fine besides the loud lifter noise. When I got home I checked everything over, but didn't pull the valve cover & everything seemed ok it all took about 20 mins., so I fired it up to find lifter that was ticking, but now there is no lifter noise ? So I took it for a ride & everything is ok. Could a lifter have got stuck & unstuck its self just from sitting ???
Should I use some type of engine flush?
Any ideas would be helpful !
I recieved the following advice from a mechanic that I work with when I had that problem. He suggested to add in 1/2 Quart of ATF to your oil. The ATF is slightly acidic and will help to clean out any oil residue that could cause your lifter to stick. It seemed to work just great, but I also switched to a fully synthetic oil for the next two oil changes. Between the two of these the lifter does not stick anymore.
i suggest going to napa and getting some SeaFoam. run half can through intake the rest through your gas tank. run for about 5mins then let sit for awhile then go for a drive. it will smoke for abit but works wonders.
ATF in the oil has been around for years and it seems to work OK. Also, you can buy some additive called Lifter Free that does a real good job. Putting stuff in the intake or the gas tank probably will help clean the intake and the valves but won't do a whole lot for the lifter problelm you describe. Hope this helps some.
Thanks guys for the ideas ! Today I took it for a ride & within 10 miles it started ticking again, so I went & got some Sea Foam & put half the can in my oil & within 60 seconds it was free & very quite. I hope it fixes the problem ! The guy a the parts store said after it breaks free & runs a few days to put mystery oil in it. Does that sound right ? I've never had any lifter trouble before with the other 14 bronco's I've had, & have never used any of these products before.
its worth a try. if after all this it still starts ticking . good excuse to upgrade the cam and lifters. just dont get suckered into fixing just the one. they are bought in sets very important
Today I drove 45 miles with no problems, then it started ticking again. Idrove home ticking all the way. It ran fine beside the noise. Don't know what to do now getting mad ! About ready to pull the motor & use it for a boat anchor. Anybody have any more ideas ? Driving my 78 Bronco that has 625 horses & runs on Sunoco purple fuel gets expensive after a while !
i had a 1975 f250 that i thought had a bad lifter, it turned out to be a wrist pin bushing. it knocked sometimes for days and other times it did not knock.i think that when it was knocking one day i removed the spark plug wires one at a time and when i got to the cylender that had the bad bushing the knock got noticeably quieter. it really had me fooled, i thought it was a lifter.
I've had a similar problem in the past year. 'Turns out it's a rocker stud that is having a groove worn into it - possibly by a mis-aligned rocker stud. The rocker begins to "tilt" and eats a groove into the stud.
I missed the "groove" several times while I was pulling rockers & checking everything else. The pressed in studs were replaced with screw in's, once I ID'd the culprit.
The first time it happened, I went nuts adjusting & re-adjusting my valves, only to have the "clack" resurface soon after. It just happened again, recently, and the cure was replacing the (now) screw in stud (again).
It has been suggested that I may also have a worn lifter bore. I HOPE NOT!
For now, a new stud every six months or so seems to be "the patch".
I learned this years ago first try the transmission fluid see if that frees it up if not pull the valve cover on the side where the lifter is ticking. Next find the rocker where the lifter is located and give it a few bangs with a rubber hammer this will force the pushrod down into the lifter and dislodge the trash in the lifter causing the noise, has worked a couple of times for me.
Thanxs all for the help ! Since ticking came back, went out today & put ATF fluid in it & ticking went away for now. I had nothing to loose by trying it. I'm crossing my fingers, hoping it will keep working & the ticking will not come back.
Thanx for all the help again & any more ideas would be appreciated !!!
if it is a suspected wrist pin you can take a peice of wood to your ear if your too cheap to buy a mechanics sthesascope and you can find where the noise is coming from. you can unplug one plug wire @ a time if it is a wrist pin the plug that is not hooked up is the one that has the knock because the noise will go away.
