NEED HELP ASAP!!

ok guys I'm new to this forum page and i need some help asap. i have a 96 F150 with the 5.8l was recent on a 150 drive down to see my parents and about 80 miles into it the check engine light came on and a pretty substantial ticking noise came about. at an idle it shakes the whole truck like crazy. i got out and it sounds like its coming from the left rear of the block closest to the driver. I'm thinking possible rod knocking? maybe a lifter stuck? need to get this fixed asap so i can get back home anything helps thanks guys.

Pull the codes, see what the engine light is pinpointing. Will narrow down the culprit.

It's OBDII not OBDI so he can't pull codes the way nearly everyone else on here can, however, OBDII monitors more than OBDI so you can garner more info anyway. You'll need some way to link to the data port under the glove box (should have a little black cover over the connector).

If it's shaking hard at idle, it sounds like a misfire to me. You can pull plugs on this truck with a 5/8 deep socket and regular 3/8" drive ratchet (unless they're originals and rusted in place..). Might be a place to start. Another trick is to pull plug wires one at a time and watch for a change in how it runs, if you pull a wire and there is no change, that is the misfiring cylinder. Pull that plug. Note: I'd shut the truck off before grabing a plug wire to unplug it, you don't want a 35,000 Volt shock, it hurts!

Another common problem is the coil to distributor wire being badly corroded, pull it off the coil & see if its really corroded.

When was the last tune up? How many miles & what kind of maintenance record does she have?

Your right but with an OBDII system you can pull into any Auto Zone & they as a rule will check it FREE.
Second if you own an OBDII System the first thing on the list to buy should be an Code Reader. Harbor Freight sells a nice $49 or $59 unit. I carry one of them & it has paid for itself over & over. Saved a lot of HELP ME. At least when I need help I have some info to provide so I can be helped.

maintenance is all in good shape just about to hit 145 ok the clock. but even a mis fire doesn't explain the loud ticking. as if a rod or something is knocking,

Could try the old wooden dowl to the ear trick (or if you have a stethoscope), to try to locate the noises origin. If its really loud, and you're certain its on the drivers side, its pretty easy to pull that valve cover and check for a broken valve spring or other issue. Hopefully its not in the bottom end..I'd be surprised if it were.

As soon as we get a telepathic channel open, someone will be able to hear the noise & tell you what it is.

Sounds like the spark plug wire was off and the spark jumping to ground was the clicking noise and the the shaking from the #8 not firing, maybe #7.
Did I guess right?
