I have an '04 F-250 SD Crew cab SB, I only had it for 3 weeks, and 2580 miles when the transmission littery blew up. I managed to get it to the dealer, who had no clue, and sednt it to a local transmission specialty shop who dropped the pan and found "Much metal/debris in transmission - due to planetry gearset faliure" (these are their words from the reciept). It took the dealer over 2 weeks to get a new transmission to install. This all happened the week before I was to leave for the outer banks of North Carolina for a week of surf fishing (with the new rig) They ended up puttting me in a Explorer as a loaner (not an equal substatute in my book). Has any one else had or heard of a problem with this tranny. I have heard 3 or 4th hand about a friend of a friend, but no one else first hand........I am trying to find out if the dealer had any possible knowledge, cause they made it sound like this was the first ever reported case.
Sorry for the "book" for my first post, but I am still fuming about this.
I have a 2005 F250 CC 4WD with the exact same problem. Only had 1822 miles on it when I felt a clunk (almost like it shifted) then notice lots of white smoke out the back. (I was towing around 9000lbs on a slight uphill grade).
I was able to coast to a stop, applying gas only made the motor rev (Like it was in neutral). I was unable to shift out of drive except to 1-3 gear, would not go to N or P. I could see where fluid leaked out from underneath by the rear main. Ruined one trip and from the sound of things will ruin another by not being fixed in time.
First thing I noticed leading up to this problem was shifting into Park became rough (kind of popped in) it was much smoother prior to my first tow, folllowed by hard shifts and slipping when going into 2nd and 3rd. hard shifts and slipping started to go away, until my 2nd tow when it broke and locked up the transmission. Hope no one else has this problem, but heard there were over 600 people waiting for a part to fix.

The pins that are pressed in to hold the gears do not always stay in place, I have seen the pins back out. I have since welded mine into place.

I have an 05 with 5000+ miles on it and just started to have strange shifting problems... It started in tow/haul mode with the tranny holding 3rd gear at wot without shifting then it progressively has gotten worse. I do drive her pretty hard and run a predator but not as hard as most. I reinstalled my original programing then but the new updated programming back on ...still after 4 or 5 cold starts it is shifting erratically. reistalled again hoping for the best..next move is to the dealer..Other then this recent happening , I LOVE my truck!
I had to have my tranny replaced on my 03 f-350 king ranch!!!! My problem started when my truck had 900 miles. When I was in tow haul mode towing my 5th wheel slowing down while exiting the highway. This is really a long story and I wont bore you with all the details. Bottom line is no problems with the tranny since.
Many would like to, it would be great behind a 7.3..............to my knowledge and all I have read it cannot be done.........it might be possible with unlimited funding...as most anything could be....with enough money.
just a thought, but wouldn't Ford consider that modding your tranny and voiding any tranny warranty ?
Again... guess I'm still one of the lucky ones... my 7.3 tranny exploded on me, but the 6-oh's has been solid the first 40k+ hard miles...
The pins that hold the planetary gears in. Yes inside the tranny! I am sure Ford would void the tranny warranty. At this point I would not go to Ford for a tranny problem, I would go to my tranny builder.
